I was wondering what you guys with 320CDI's were doing to drive in your engine. I get mixed information from the Mercedes people so....
Some say that no special threatment is necessary, there is no need to hold back during the first 1500km or anything...
Others advise me to take it a bit easy with reving the engine anyway... There are even some people who advise me to not hold back at all since that would make the engine a bit lazy....(all this of course when the engine is warm, which is the basic rule anyway)
I have done about 900km now and max rpm that I have used is 2400.
I drive my mclass like I want it to run.I currently own an 06 Ive put 34000 in 11 months. When it was new I drove from 55 to 100 mph. The only thing I do is vary my speed, especially on long trips, for about first 10000 miles. My ml doesn't use any oil and run like a sports car.
For break in I drive it as I would any other vehicle. I do not thrash my cars, well maybe the Vette a little... On the interstate cruising at 60 to 75 MPH I might slow down and accelerate if I think about it. On local roads when nobody is around I will slow down and floor it so the engine runs up to the shift points (to include a safe stopping distance) a couple of times a week. On other vehicles I've owned I believe after 5 or 6 thousand miles it should be broke in. On this one I'm still on the fence about changing the oil at 6,000 miles or waiting until the Service A due signal comes up.

I have been driving all the way up to 100 mph for the first 1500 miles, varying the speeds as well. After that magical number I floored it all the way to 131mph. The other day I saw 140 on a downhill section of the motorway but speeds like that are pointless with this car as it is a bit too unstable for my liking. Just once in a while to get a bit of an adrelanin fix.
To be honest with you if you plan to keep the car beyond 3 years (as a rule of thumb) be a bit cautious during the first 1500 miles. Otherwise just use it as you would use your previous or other cars. Engine is covered by warranty.
Having driven diesel powered vehicles for a number of years they thrive on being driven briskly. I agree with Chris about not thrashing engines - but you enjoy your ML320 CDI Ilpaco. I take delivery of mine either tomorrow or Friday and I am really looking forward to it
