Oil changes/when?

I am the proud owner os 350 M class. My dealer will service car at 1K and 6K miles. Should I change Oil at 1K or 6K or wait till 13K service. My son who s opinion I value a great deal feels it should be done at 1K. Please offer you opinions etc.

Do what the manual says, 13000 is fine. Early changes won't hurt anything except your wallet

MB will service yor car but will not change the oil until 13k miles, unless you ask for it. The first svc that calls for an oil change is at 13k miles.

Many schools of thought on oil chnages. High performance cars all get their 1st oil changes done at 1200 miles so that you can remove and metallic particles from the engine that get into the oil (during break in). However, most regular engines like ours need oil changes at larger interval

MB suggest oil chnages every 13k miles or annually
BMW suggests oil changes every 15k miles or annually
Most people married to the old methods will change every 3000-5000 miles
My very capable Independant MB mechanic has asked me to change the oil on my ML350 every 6000miles (which i intend to do)

So to answer your question...yes you can change the oil at 1000 miles but it is not needed (you can change it whenever you like really). i would stick to changing it at 6000miles and then every 6000 miles. However, changing it at the suggested intervals of 13k miles has not lead to any issues either.

If I paid $50,000-$100,000 for a car I would not be changing the oil every 13K miles. I think that is too long to go. I have several customers that change it every 6000 miles or every 7000. they will come in for a oil change and then 7000 miles later get the a or b service.

This topic is getting very interesting!... This is what I think... if the design and engineering of this engine allows 13K before oil change (with recommended oil) and the manual says so... then in my opinion this was tested true in labs. They don't just say 13K so that they could kill your engine!!! and this has nothing to do with how much you paid for your car... this is pure physics... the way the engine was designed...

Like "sosh" stated above, ... it doesn't hurt anything doing it early either, ... except your wallet....

You can change anything prematurely if you want, ... tires every 5K miles, etc ... it's up to you and your wallet...

It may not be necessary, but I change it at the midpoints between regular changes myself. The difference in wear will likely not show up until well after 100k miles, but I just feel better and an extra $50 every 13k is no big deal.

Keep in mind that MB recommended lifetime no service and sealed on the 5 speed auto. It turns ut that "lifetime" ended far too often right after the warranty expired. They have since changed their recommendation to routine fluid flush and filter change.

I just changed the oil and filter on my ML320 CDI at 1100 miles, and will do so again at 5,000 miles and every 5,000 thereafter. It's cheap ($12.75 + 9 X $5.50 = $63) insurance.

Appreciate all of your opinions. My son has convinced me to change oil at 1k and at 6k. Will do Also after 1000 miles I noticed the following. Soft break, about 1-2 inch travel, 25% of the time my driver side rear mirror does not return to desired position after unlocking and at ideling I notice a very slight vibration. Any thoughts. I take in for 1k service this Friday. Thanks all.

You harm the engine changing oil early!

Your motor came with a break in oil produced by Fuchs, (Titan). This oil MUST REMAIN IN THE MOTOR to ensure a PROPER BREAK IN AND SEATING OF THE RINGS and other internal components.

Your engine was run in at the factory in a test cell to achieve the initial break in. The motor from that point forward was drained and filled with the initial fill oil produced by Fuchs to assure proper break in over the next 13,000 miles.

I would STRONGLY suggest disregarding the BS on changing the oil at 1,000 miles or risk DAMAGE TO YOUR ENGINE!!!

Also changing the oil early after the initial fill harms the motor due to the period of time to activate the oils additives. Most long drain oils have additives that become active only after exposure to heat and pressure. These additives go thru a "Additive activation cycle" in the first 1,000 miles of use. This is the period of time when your engine sees the highest wear rates. From that point on your motor is protected and also why MB does not want you to change the oil early. More frequent changes results in more additive activation cycles and increased wear in the motor than if you had just followed the owners manual and recomendations of Mercedes.

You paid for a great vehicle, you also paid for the expertise of MB and their engineering, FOLLOW THE OWNERS MANUAL!

The so called expertise of MB is more than often in question. I have very little feelings about changing the oil after 1,000 initial miles. Frankly, the engine is designed well enough that you should not have to worry about that a whole lot. On the other hand, there is going to be a certain amount of scouring involved on the cylinder walls and any other moving parts. This is to be expected, and will undoubtably result in a higher amount of metallic shavings during a so-called 'break-in period'. If I were you, I would ask the Shop Foreman what he thinks. Service Managers are there to get you to spend money, and General Technicians may not have enough experience to answer your question. As the foreman of the MB shop about changing your oil after 1000 miles.

As far as changing it on a regular interval....do it more often, FAR more often than 13,000 miles. Does anyone remember the W163? When first out, we were told you could go 15,000 miles on an oil change. We started seeing a massive amount of carbon buildup on the cylinder heads due to massive scoring on the cylinder walls, allowing oil to seep on the the cylinder head and turn into build up. This caused a total engine replacement. Go ask what a new crate engine costs for your ML. If the customers had changed their oil more often, around 6K miles, then there would not have been a problem.

Do whatever you want. Personally? Paying 60K for a vehicle, I can afford an oil change at 6K miles. I know it'll save me $10K down the road for a new engine, regardless of what the MB engineers say.

Dont just blindly trust what anyone tells you. Regardless of their admitted engineering mistakes, they dont always just fix it for you.

Questions? Bring them on...
