When I was at the dealers having the stall problem fixed, I was told that the car has to go in for a 4.5hr repair to the front suspension - it's a recall to fit plates to strengthen the strut tops (that's what the guy said).
Anybody else had this done?? It's got Airmatic if that makes a difference.

Service campaign Campaign No. 2006010005, March 2006.
MODEL 164 MODEL YEAR 2006
INSTALL PLATE AT UPPER CONTROL ARM
This service campaign has been initiated because DCAG has determined that on the affected vehicles (see VIN range below) off-road use or rough (wash board) surfaces may result in unacceptable noise and vibration in the steering mechanism. Dealers will install a plate to prevent any increase in vibration and
resulting noise.

I had this recall done about 1 week ago..in fact there where about 4 or 5 recalls done to my car that same dame..you should ask your service advisor if there are any more recalls on the car
How many of you think the airmatic help with handling? It what way? Is it worth having to buy the Option Package III just to get airmatic if you normally would have not bought any package?
I passed on airmatic on my CDI. The regular suspension seemed like a big improvement over the handling of the minivan that the ML will be replacing in about a week. My impression from reading benzworld postings is that the number of owners that love their airmatic is less than the number of owners that have problems with it, which can occur as early as the first week or two of ownership. Owners with airmatic tend to want their cars to also have lower profile tires with larger wheels to improve their cornering. The poor man's "airmatic" for comfort is found in the extra 1" thickness of tire and air that the 17" wheels have, as opposed to 19" wheels. The 17" wheels have less expensive tires that last longer and should do better on snow, which is why I want a four wheel drive vehicle anyway. If you want a sports vehicle with hauling capacity, buy a limited optioned ML and a Mini, and you would spend about the same as someone fully optioning out an ML500. Even better, buy that ML and a Lotus instead of the ML63.
Thats not true, we're just a bunch of picky people who like to state every problem we have with airmatic. we would never give it up for standard suspension, and by the way lotus is trash and lotus does not make an suv that can tow 5000 pounds, and go from 0-60 MPH in 4.5 seconds. Just to tell you a Lotus elise or espree whatever has a toyota celica engine. why pay $60,000 for a $15,000 toyota. I'm the only one that wants lower profile tires, because i live in L.A. and the freeways aren't that great. Don't get us wrong.
I've only lived with the airmatic for three weeks but so far I like the versatility of it. Like Thinkman, I like the look of a lower riding chasis for my day to day driving. But just this evening, I raised the suspension to take a shortcut across a grassy area and needed a little more clearance. Last weekend I needed to raise the hitch to hook up my boat trailer, no problem. I'm very pleased with it so far.
