wiping front wiping when starting engine

Why do the blades clean the front window, when starting the engine ?
I've got rain sensor.
Is there any possibility to 'delete' the wiping when starting ?

I have my wipers turned on all the time (let the rain sensor do the work) and do not experience a wipe when starting......imaging this will be hard on blades (dry wipe with no water to lubricate the glass).

Could the sensor it be dirty or defective or do you think this is this 'normal' operation? Is it described in the manual?

No this is not normal operation. Wiper should not wipe at every vehicle start up. Clean your windows esp. over the sensor. Rotate wiper switch on & off several times. If it still persists, see your MB service guy.

It's happened to me before, it's when i used to turn on the rain sensor when the car and battery are completely off, i'd turn the switch once, and usually like normal when i turned on the engine it would wipe, does it once then never again.

This could be due to dew forming on the windshield during the night. I don't know how humid it gets at night where you live, but nowadays in Ankara there is usually a thin film of dew on the windshield in the morning and the wiper invariably starts with the ignition.

Stev,

Are you still having the same problem? Or you have it fixed? The dealer told me its normal for the wiper to swipe once at every start of engine? Kinda BS to me.

I am new to this....so should i always leave the wiper switch in the 1st position and let the sensor make the decision? I have the rain sensor but there is no special swicth for it and i believe the manual states that the rain sensor works when the switch is turned to the first position
Please let me know if this true
