Decision help: 2007 ML500 or 2007 X5?

I currently drive a 2002 BMW 330i, purchased new, and have been exceeding happy with it: performance and quality have been flawless. I'm now considering buying either a 2007 Mercedes ML500 or a 2007 BMW X5. I'm leaning towards the ML500, but am hesitant because of the quality & reliability issues that have been raised here, particularly the transmission issues. Spending around $60-g's for a new SUV and inheriting design flaw problems worries me.

Could those of you owning a 2006 ML500 advise me, encourage me, or warn me? I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

I own a 2006 ML500. If you read my other post, you can see all the problems i've had. Honestly, the ML is a great car. My car was was built in 2005 and I don't think they got all the kinks out yet. By now, I'm sure they've figured it all out. I think the style and the interior is much more nice than the X5. (That's my opinion) You should test drive both of them and decide for yourself which you like more. Hope this helps you

Aren't they just about to announce the new facelifted X5? I'd wait for it and compare it to the new ML later.

I saw spy-photos of new X5 and it looks like Volvo, not too impressive in my opinion...
I used to have 2004X5 though and was pretty happy with it.
Exterior-wise ML looks much better I think, BMW is a little more sportier but you should definitely test drive both and see...

mbs999, check out some latest spy pics of upcoming bmw x5 pics at: http://tinyurl.com/lmnad , hopefully these pics will convince you to get 2007 ML..

Basically X5 has changed little and it looks more like a X3 now..

I have a 2006 ML500 and it's worked flawlessly for me. I love the SUV. It drives like a car and really zips. You should seriously consider the ML.

Other than my V6 vice V8 to the ML500, no problems so far. I have a BMW M3 and they are not problem free either.

Thanks, everyone, for the info. If others in Benzworld would add their experiences, I'd appreciate it. I do plan on test driving both the 2007 ML500 & X5. I'm hoping that whatever bugs were in the new design of the '06 ML500 will have been corrected in the '07. And yes, I know the '07 X5 is being upgraded; that's why I'm waiting for both '07 models.

Thanks for your help!

I would also test drive a 2007 ML320 CDI. It has more horsepower (up to about 3000 rpm, anyway) and torque (about 15% more) than the ML500, along with much better fuel economy (44% better city). Check your current car's tachometer and see how often you actually rev your engine beyond 3000 rpm and decide if you want to pay extra for that luxury.
