Question for the group - Bumper Protector Rear Hatch

I purchased a factory rear bumper plate. It is the chrome ribbed piece that sits on the bumper under the hatch to protect the bumper when loading and unloading the back.

I am trying to figure out how to mount it. On the front edge of the piece it has these "U" shaped pieces that clip over the front edge of the top of the rear bumper. There are about 6 or 8 hollow studs along that back edge that look like you need to drill a series of holes in the top bumper cover. These studs look like they would accept a screw from the bottom of the bumper if you could get to it.

Can someone who has one of these on the ML look underneath the rear bumper to see if there are screws visible?

Does anybody know if you can buy one of these that us the 3M automotive tape to hold them in place?

RE: Question for the group - Bumper Protector Rear Hatch

Andy,

I just checked on mine, I have the Chrome plates on the inside and outside of the rear hatch. I cannot see any screws from the bottom because of the rear skid plate and bumper itself. I do not see any attachment screws on the top of the plates either, meaning they must be mounted from underneath, snap in or use adhesive.

Mine, which came with the Appearance Package, has no clips at the front endge. I can't see the bottom clearly from underneath because of the trailer hitch crossmember. I tried using an illuminated inspection mirror, but did not see any fasteners underneath.

Foam tape should work fine since it's a light piece and on a horizontal surface. I would go to a marine supply and get marine grade tape. Clean the surfaces well before installation.

RE: Question for the group - Bumper Protector Rear Hatch

Mine came with the chrome piece. I looked and can see no mechanical fasteners at all. Must be glued on. I do not think I would go with the foam tape as its rather thick and may cause the piece not to fit as flush as it should. What I suggest is to find out from the dealer what sort of adhesive they use. If you can't find out try (very sparingly) an adhesive from 3M called 5200. Its a marine adhesive and used in building boats. Remember once its on you will never be able to get it off without damage to the bumper. First scuff up the bumper in the area the piece fits on.

I have the cover. It took me about 15 min to fit it, and it takes a little more fiddling than the instructions suggest, but now its in place its doing its job well. All belts and headrests are functional, except I may not have the center belt working. Very solid construction, and while it doesn't match the macadamia leather that well, it still looks OK.

It save a lot of new owner type worries, since kids like to climb all over the seats.
