First impressions

Got the rig last Friday, here are some of my first impressions:

[:)]
Excellent built, get a much better quality feeling than the W163
Smooth, silent, powerfull 320CDi
7-speed tranny almost (see below) works perfectly
Airmatic is a dream, get the limo feeling back

[:(]
(Powered) rear hatch is not closing most of the time without assist by me (lifting up a bit).
7-speed tranny jerks at lower speed*
This morning with below 0 (celsius) condition a nasty squeeking sound from the engine plus a humming power steering.

*can anyone of the esteemed members link me to the service bulletin re the transmision valve problem?

RE: First impressions

Re: the rear hatch, you have to make sure your car has an updated latch mechanism (same part # as the old part), and if so, your service department has to make fine adjustments to it. Had the same problem with mine, although it has now been fixed. Can't believe that MB lets all these ML's leave the factory with such an obvious, systemic problem.

RE:Transmission Problems

I do not know that MB has issued a TSB regarding this problem. As I have posted under another thread I will be meeting with the MB tech rep at the end of this month to see if they can solve this problem on our 350. They are aware of the problem and at some point created updated software as a solution. Will let you know the results of my service call.

RE: First impressions

Hi It's,

Another 320 CDi owner (Steve) had a problem with his engine in the cold (over revved at idle). I'm due to pick mine up tomorrow (17/01/06) so I hope (selfishly perhaps?) this is not another (major) problem.

I would have thought that as this engine is available in other models (C-class, E-class etc.) it should be OK.

Cheers,

Dieter

I am also facing the same problems along with other problems. I have appointment scheduled for thursday with big laundry list of problems.

I emailed the list of problems to my SA and her first reaction was "did you buy this new or used". Even she is surprised or rather shocked with this many issues. Lets see how it turns out... Will keep everyone posted.

RE: First impressions

No more strange engine/power steering sound this morning, guess because it's 5 degrees (celsius) above zero?

Went to the dealer, they acknowledge the power hitch problem and will repair it in a few days. The other issues will be looked at in 2 weeks after some more driving, maybe some more issues will pop up.

What a silly thing to say of her... What were the problems you had?

RE: First impressions

Hi,

Got my 320 CDi today. What a difference from (W163) old ML 270 CDi (though it never missed a beat).

Have to agree completely with 'it's not him') except that everything works fine [:D], even the rear power tail gate, which shuts with a satisfying 'clunk'.

Diesel (V6 320 CDi) engine is a revelation, smooth and really quiet (perhaps my old 270 CDi deafened me a bit?) as is the ride and gearbox.

Cheers,

Dieter
