Cracked front windshield

Very unfortunate during the weekend to have a rock fly out of the truck in front of me and cracked my windshield. (about 1 inch deep) Called dealer and they quoted me prices for (2) windshields. They said my appearance pack equipped ML comes w/ the blue-tinted windshield and therefore would cost $580 as compared to a non-tinted which cost $530. Can someone please comment any difference between the 2 windshields??? Does the blue-tinted 1 deflect heat or have some kind of special feature??? If not, then I might go with the regular 1 because can't tell difference anyways.

RE: Cracked front windshield

As far as I know, the blue tint is not heat reflecting but is only different in color from the neutral tint one. If you go to neutral, the windshield tint will not match the front door window tint. The one that comes with the 3-Zone Climate Package reflects heat.

Thanks for your response. I double-checked with parts dept. and they say other than tint, no difference whatsoever. So decided to order blue-tinted windshield which will take 2-3 days for delivery and $250 labor cost. [:(]

Oh btw.., do you think the labor cost will be cheaper if I let someone else do it??? Is it a wise move because afterall, only MB techs are familiar with the new ML???

In my opinion I like the dealer to do major work and some minor work...who am I kidding, I like them to do all the work personally. If something goes wrong it is way easier dealing with them to correct any issues. Not sure if your loss is covered by your insurance but may help with the cost.

RE: Cracked front windshield

Get the blue tinted one. We had the windshield replaced on our C240 Sport and they replaced it without the blue windshield.

You could notice a difference, even though the dealer said that we never got a blue iwndshield in NA. [:(!]

Let the dealer do it even if it cost more. Independent shops usually don't have a resonable labor warranty that MB has. Besides, this is a new car and MB should know the in's-out's. And from experience, if the windshield is not installed/sealed correctly, you will encounter water/air leaks.

Your dealer won't install the window, they will sub it out to a glass company.

RE: Cracked front windshield

When I got the '03 ML350 the rain sensor didn't work so the dealer had another windshield put in (by a glass company). On the way home a rock took a chip out of the new windshield. [:(] I had them repair the chip, but, I noticed that the windshield was installed off-center so I complained about it. Dealer had the glass company install a 2nd new windshield and made sure it was centered. That one has been fine.

RE: Cracked front windshield

finally replaced the windshield and it was leaking water where the SOS button is and heard air leaks from a few areas. furthermore, they replaced it with a regular windshield instead of the blue-tinted one that comes with my appearance package. had a lengthy conversation with the mb authorized body shop regarding my concerns if the water leak will affect any electrical wiring and that they need to replace it with a blue-tinted windshield. it's been in the body shop for 2 weeks now and they keep on telling me they are waiting for windshild parts from mb. wondering what kind of parts???? sealant, insulation foam, etc....?????? also, they mentioned they will use some kind of heat sealing process this time to make sure it's sealed correctly. man..., didn't know so much trouble just to change a windshield.

RE: Cracked front windshield

Why can't they let you drive your ML while they are waiting for the parts? It might be that they are out of windshields with the blue tint and are waiting for on to come from the manufacturer.

If your ML has the rain sensor make sure that it works proplerly after the installation of the windshield.

Oh, btw I was told that the windshield was part of the roof support so you want to make sure that they use the correct materials to bond the windshield to the body.
