Could anyone help me with the following two questions about our new 2006 ML 350?
The manual instructs that we may not use "portable telephones or 2-way radios in the car w/o connection to an outside antenna otherwise there will be problems with the eelectronics. Is this really the case?
And, is there a way to hook up any other cell phone to the hands free system in the car other than the Mercedes approved Motorola models?
I have used my Treo 650 while driving (I know, I know [xx(]) and I haven't noticed anything wrong with the car. If it's that sensitive, I shouldn't be driving under power lines...
As for the hands free systems, there are a number of systems out there that hook up to the 12V power supply and should not have anything to do with the MB system. You may not be able to use the car's speakers for that purpose, but you should be able to use almost any hands free system out there. I'm sure third party systems will show up very soon. Just make sure they don't void any of your warranties...
This has been an MB warning for years in all models. I have a built in MB Cell but my wife uses her hand held in both of our cars and we have never had a problem. I can see that there is potential for one but everyone seems to do it and I have never heard of an issue.
The MB phones are really the only ones that will allow integration with the vehicle. Have heard of some people hacking some convoluted phones and wiring into the cars but it seems that all functions never work. I for one would not allow that in any of my vehicles as the downside (other damages) is too great particularly with the fiber optics. Its really a shame that the MB phones are outragously expensive but I do it anyway.
