Have anyone installed an after market mobile dvd system? My dealer in Canada said that the one offer by Mercedes Canada is not avalible until next year. Any recommendations.
I went through the same process on my 06 ml350. With 2 kids of viewing age, I didn't like the MB unit because with car seats, the screen was within kicking range. :(
I went with 2 audiovox headrest DVD units. Sound comes through radio and/or headset. Each unit can play it's own dvd, source from the other or aux input. The remote has M1 and M2 for the respective unit. Only problem is that M1 must be on for sound to come through radio.
Since the headrest in the 06 is too small for a decent size screen, the installation comes with previous ML headrests with 7 inch letterbox screens.
My dealer has offered to install a similar DVD setup, also with dual Audiovox units. I've seen comparable Audiovox units, advertised online, in the $1200-$1500 range, though I'm not sure whether these are the exact same units as would be installed by the dealer. If you don't mind, what price did you pay and how long did the install take? Thanks.
The setup I have required two brand new 05 headrests as the 2006 ML headrests are way too small for this approach. I paid 2k for the setup. I'm not sure how long the install took because it was part of new car prep but from what I understand it was half a day.
Thanks, John. Our dealer would also use the 2005 headrests, since the 2006 ones, as you noted, are way too small to house a 7" screen.
He initially quoted a price of $3195, but was then "willing" to knock off $400. Even at $2800, however, the price still seemed somewhat high. With man-hours added, $2000 seems about right. Which dealer did you use to get the work done? We bought ours at Mercedes of Nanuet (NY).
I leased my 06 at MB of Huntington, Long Island. I can send pics of the install if you would like. If interested, I can send you the sales team names. I've been very happy there for quite a while. I'm on my 3rd vehicle from there.
Please note that this price was negotiated with the whole vehicle on the table and was worked into the lease.
Thanks, John. The $2800 price, from our dealer, was also provided at the time of purchase. At $800 below invoice on a new 2006 ML500, I felt I had gotten a pretty decent deal on the car, itself, and, as a result, didn't aggressively pursue further discounts on the DVD, especially since I wanted to investigate the options, first (i.e. 2005 headrest mount vs. MB OEM unit).
My dealer did have the setup installed on a showroom vehicle, however, so I was able to see it; I imagine it's very comparable, if not identical, to yours. The dealer claims that the units I've seen for sale, online, are different than those he installs; frankly, I'm not so sure. If you could provide the model number of the Audiovox units, that might be helpful, as I can at least ensure that I'm comparing apples to apples.
In a pinch, I could certainly go to Huntington for the install, but it would be that much easier if I could simply build a case and get my local dealer to comply with a more reasonable price.
