Advanced Tire Pressure Monitoring System

I just noticed in the Owner's Manual (p. 351) a description of an "Advanced TPMS" that dispalys readings of individual tire pressures via sensors attached to the wheels. This is similar to aftermarket systems, but is integrated. Anyone know anything about availability of this? I hadn't seen it mentioned before. I hope it can be retrofitted.

RE: Advanced Tire Pressure Monitoring System

Greg,

according to what I've seen so far on the German fora, this option is "late availability" over here.

Generally, there is a bit of scepticism on this kind of systems. Apparently their reliability is questionable, and the sensors are expensive. Also, if you have non-stock wheels, there can be problems getting a sensor that will fit.

Most of the Germans I've read about have renounced from getting the monitoring system because of the added delay.

I suppose it can be retrofitted - but at a price!

Best greetings from a grey and rainy Luxembourg,
Birger

Greg and Birger, and here's the description of both systems from the supplier.

Greg...

Yes the system is similar to that that is available on the S-Class/CL-Class. I too would be wary of it as it is generally quite pricey. A good Accutire digital gauge and checking the tires every fortnight should be good for most cases [:)]

RE: Advanced Tire Pressure Monitoring System

This may not be directly related, but in the manual for my 2006 ML500 it indicates that I have the Advanced Tire Pressure Monitoring System (Advanced TPMS). However, I have never been able to find the tire pressures in the multifunction display. I called MB on this and they said the dealer would have to activate this part of the software or something to that effect. Has anyone with a new 2006 ML been able to see the tire pressures on their multifunction display?

What you do have is the ABS sensor based tire pressure warning system which lights up an indicator should one of your tires deflate below a preset minimum level. The pressure monitoring system which can be displayed in the multi-function display is a late availability option (and a rather pricey one at that!).

RE: Advanced Tire Pressure Monitoring System

[OT] @Drew and Wolfgang:

I adore following your small, friendly [:)] competition as to who has the longest signature. Eventually Wolfgang may put the complete part list there [;)]

In that connection it was rather interesting to note that on my first, Alabama-made W163 the light bulbs in the Mexican-made Hella headlights were Hungarian-made Osrams....

To get back to the subject: The manual includes every possible option. The fact that you have the description of the ATPMS in the manual does not imply that your car also has it - the manual also contains a thorough description of the Off-Road Pro package...

Cheers from Luxembourg,

Birger

RE: Advanced Tire Pressure Monitoring System

Good point on everything in the manual isn't on every vehicle. However, in my call to MB the particular customer support person I spoke to didn't know that this option wasn't yet available and indicated that I have it, but the software isn't displaying the screen with the tire pressures. Obviously customer support personnel can't know everything and they have many different types of vehicles to become familiar with, but I figured they knew more than I did and also maybe more than the dealer might know as well.

But I received the "facts" here at "benzworld" and I appreciate it.

Thanks

RE: Advanced Tire Pressure Monitoring System

The system presently in the ML (and other 2006 models) is now a requirement in all US cars. The individual read out for each tire is a forhtcoming option and is not part of the required notice of low pressure.

Look what I just "found". A part on my ML made in Yokohama, Japan. That must be the reason it works so well? [:)]
