Cargo Capcity and Dimensions

I was doing a little comparison and was converting the 2050 liter cargo capacity shown in the MB press release. The reference sheet I had converted it to 72.39 cubic feet. Can this be correct? The W164 is larger than the W163, but the cargo capacity shrinks by 10 cubic feet??? Can someone confirm if I am using the right numbers to do this conversion?

I was looking at the W163 -vs- W164 -vs- XC90 (want the third row seating)

W163 W164 XC90
=====================================
L 182.6 188.4 188.9

W 72.4 75.2 74.7

H 71.7 71.3 70.2

WB 111.0 114.0 112.5

Cargo 81.2 72.4 93.2
Cap.

I was wondering the same thing. Your figures appear to be correct. Also, space behind the 2nd row seat shrank from 34.7 to 29.4 cu. ft. The roof is lower; maybe the load floor is higher, as well.

The above figures can't really be compared. The W164 is measured using the VDA method. I have not yet seen a US cargo volume figure for it, other than a preliminary one, published in Autoweek and giving 77 cu ft.

To compare, here is the number from www.volvocars.de:

"Bei vollständig heruntergeklappten Rückenlehnen der zweiten und dritten Sitzreihe: 1837 Liter*
*VDA-Messmethode"

The equivalent number for the W164 with the second row folded, but not removed, is 1830 Liters.

Thank you for the clarification. So it appears that the cargo volume probably has increased from the W163.

Greg, the VDA volume increased from 2030 to 2050 Liters.
But the W163 number to beat is the 2418 liters (85.4 cu ft) SAE cargo volume from your 98/99 ML320. [:D]

RE: Cargo Capacity and Dimensions

Thanks guys!

I do still love my 99. When I compare it to the 05 there are still many things that I prefer on the 99 design.

I once had my 99 ML320 side by side with the XC90 to visually compare rear cargo area. The XC90 was longer from the back of the second row to the tailgate. It also had the drop down tailgate to hang things out the back. However, the ML was taller. I often find that I need that extra height when hauling items.

RE: Cargo Capcity and Dimensions

MBUSA put up a pdf info file and it says 72.4 cu ft, apparently based on the VDA numbers. So apparently they are saying the interior IS smaller.

I wonder how it could be that much smaller with the length and width growing so much?

Their new number might be in error... It's the 2050 liter VDA number converted to cu ft.

I also wonder if the roll sensor activated belt tensioner mentioned in that pdf is standard or part of the optional Pre-Safe?
