portable navigation

The Garmin ique 3600 is a GPS and a PDA.For those who doesn't want to spend $1500 for the GPS alone, this is a very good choice for less than $500. I got it last month and find it very useful as a GPS and PDA. The GPS is very accurate. You don't even need an external antenna. You just flip up the antenna from the back of the PDA. I can switch it to another car if I choose. All you need is to get a portable mount to put on the dash. The maps come with the unit with very detail info for US and Can. See attached photos.

Garmin Streetpilot III

I'm using a Streepilot III with an external dash mounted antenna. I typically get better than 20 foot location accuracy.

Works superbly in the Southwest deserts...

portable navigation

The only time that you don't receive the satellite signals is when you're indoor or under the bridge for a long period of time.

Re: portable navigation

How do you find it works as you approach turns or go in reverse? Also, how fast can it recognize the speed you are going?

It has a voice guideance telling you when to make a turn and how far you're from the turn. It also has a function that shows the driver how he going and calculate the app time of arrival. Exactly the same thing that a mercedes dvd navigation will do and more.

I am just curious because with the Mercedes NAV, the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) is connected to the transmission. MPH and reverse are calculated this way for dead reckoning. How fast does yours figure this out without VSS?

Location accuracy

With 20 foot location accuracy using just satellite signals, a VSS input is not really necessary.
