On the good side.. I am getting actual 330 miles/tank city and 400 miles/tank on the highway. These are not calculated miles but actual mileage between regular refills.
It has been going up since I bought it on 2001 and I have 60,000+ miles on it, right now...
How many actual (not calculated) miles are you getting per full tank..? From the numbers I have seen in the posts, it seems that many 430/500/55 get 400 miles per tank, too..? Seems that a bigger engine propels the ML easier on the highway and help it achieve good mileage, too..?

I get around 300 in city before I fill up, computer says I could make 330 or so - just depends on stop and go traffic. I usually get 14-15 mpg in town.
On recent 1005 mile highway trip (each way) I would fill up at 350-375 when the reserve would first come on, not wanted to get stuck somewhere in the middle of the night. I'm sure I could have gotten 400-425 on those tanks running 75 mph. I'm thrilled my my gas mileage and when I plant my foot at 75 mph she still takes off like a jack rabbit!
Yes, seems that the V8s get going better on the hi-waybecause the power allows them to stay in 5th gear. I would guess that the 320/350s shift down to maintain speeds going up long grades.
Just my thought.
Check post above, my Hershey did 19.5. Not bad with 44k miles on it.
Don't worry, I don't even get close to that. You did not get an ML for mileage, right?

I would seriously think that your location (hilly SF) would have alot to do with your poor mileage. Takes alot of grunt to get our 5000lb monsters moving...let alone on steep hills!
re.: Hills . . Agree! I live at bottom of a GOOD hill.
In the mornings, when the engine is still cold, I can lose one to three miles-per-gallon (depending how far I've gone on the tank) on the computer just going up 120 feet within 1/4-mile. If the engine is warm during the day, the loss is much less.
