I'm going to start a new thread on this. Why you DONT OWN a rolex if you own a Mercedes
A few years ago a friend of mine bought a $17,000.00 Rolex with all the bells and whistles (Gold, a few diamonds, Waterproof to like the depth of where you could find a Giant Squid, etc.)
Anyway it was the picture of BLING!! [8D][8D][8D]
He had it for 1 month and it stopped working [:(]
So he brought it back to the place he had bought it from, and the first words from the mouth of the guy at the store was: You didn't get it wet, did you? [?][?][?]
So apparently, he spent $17,000.00 on this watch and can't even walk in the rain without carrying a Rolex Umbrella.
That is nonsense. All rolexes are made waterproof (not water-resistant) to a minimum depth of 100m. The Submariner among others is waterproof with a triple locking crown to 300m.
I have actually gone diving with mine in salt water, wear it into the shower and pool on rare occasions, with no problems. Rolexes are the closest thing to indestructible that watches come to.
Your friend bought a very expensive fake from an unreputable dealer.

My friend is a Mulit Milinoaire who bought this from a very reputable Rolex Jewlery Store in NY. I have purchased a few Movado watches there myself.
Take it for what it's worth but this is a very True Story. I'm very sure you or anyone wouldn't spend $17,000 on a fake watch

Being aware of the fake is the trick.
Dealers know Rolex are waterproof, and don't look on in horror when you tell them you got it wet.
Waterproof and reliability are what Rolex are all about. Since I bought mine MANY people with Rolex have given me stories about how they used to go through a watch every year or two, now have used the same one for 20years.

Its a fact that ALL Rolex watches are guaranteed waterproof to at least a depth of 100 meters. Its also a fact that occasionally even the most expensive of items from presumably reputable producers of quality can fail for one reason or another. Even when brand new. How many threads on this particular forum have there been discussing quality and failure issues concerning the ML? I guarantee you that if your Rolex ever fails and you return to Rolex USA, it will get fixed. Can't say the same for some of the folks on this forum who are still trying to get MB to address inumerable quality issues they have had with their vehicles.
Personally, I think the watch salesman your friend dealt with is a moron! Anyone who is employed as a salesman with an authorized Rolex dealer and doesn't know of the watches waterproof properties, probably shouldn't be selling them.
Makes for a good tale though, especially if one doesn't know any better.
owned a tag for years but have crossed over =) for most more than 2 years now
that guy with that 17k watch could very well have bought a real one. I suspect he could have been adjusting the date or time and did not screw down the bezel all the way. this could have caused a moisture breach ?
17K watch must have lots of "aftermarket" mods. Also they probably did a butcher job replacing parts. They may have also failed to replace the proper gaskets.
This is like doing a cylinder head job and re using the head gaskets. It will have defects.
my 2 cents

I've been given nice watches: the best so far is a SS Omega Seamaster, blue face and dial, automatic. I like it, and the look of it, especially compared to the watches I've seen in MB's magazine.
A friend of mine bought a Rolex as a retirement gift to himself. He's only about about 53 years old and drives one of the least expensive Toyotas.
Actually, it's not a fake. It was sent back to Rolex and fixed and he still has it to this day. Don't get me wrong, he loves his watch, it's just that's exactly what the guy at the place said to him when he brought it back not working.
PS. He also say's his $200.00 Seiko keeps better time than the $17,000.00 Rolex [:0]

That is the irony. A cheapo Seiko with a battery will keep time better than a work of art like a mechanical watch be it a Rolex, or a Patek. My watch winder costs more than a Seiko. How accurate does a wristwatch have to be? I am always about 20 minutes late for most things anyway, and I use the minute hand to advance the date on short months which corrects everything anyway.
Just checked the time on the watch that came with my Time magazine subscription two years ago. The ultimate cheap watch was about 5 minutes slow, and may have been when I put it in the drawer.
