Soft brake pedal question

Yesterday my dealer replaced the front disc pads. Now the brake pedal seems soft. My 99 ML320 stops but with more foot pressure the pedal fades down almost to the floor. I can't imagine that changing pads would change the pedal feel because it's the same hydraulic system. With constant firm pressure, when stopped and engine running, does your pedal fade down low? I tried my wife's E320 and it has a much more firm pedal. Am I imagining this?

Mine has always felt soft and as if you could press it down to the floor boards....

Having the dealer change the pads and bleed the braking system didn't help. Still very soft & mushy. I'm told this is normal and is to help modulate the brakes while off road.

I think I notice it more when I switch between my 996, which has sharp hard brakes, and my wifes ML430 whose brakes in comparison don't inspire confidence.

That's not to say their ineffective and faulty - just different (imho in a bad way).

I am not sure if the 99 ML's have rear drums, if so, they may have not adjusted them

other wise, have them pressure bled. Insist on using a pressure bleeder, not just a "foot-pump-bleed".

Hope this helps.

Believe all ML's have had rear disks brakes from day one....

maybe you're thinking about the parking / emergency brake which uses drums on the rear ?

I have been told the same thing, and they do help prevent locking up the wheels in the dirt. At really slow speeds it makes a difference when all the electronic systems are either off or useless.

The big difference for me is going from the ML to our Honda Van. First couple of stops nearly throw me through the windshield.

My only problem has been at traffic signals. Our Honda and my M3 (a 5 speed) don't require a stiff leg on the brake to keep from moving forward. When I first got the ML I found myself rolling forward a couple of times after sitting still for a while and slowly letting up on the brake unconsciously.
