Thanks for the info....I'll probably just get it steam cleaned because it will take a very long time to do it the Simple Green way.
It took me 10 minutes and prior to that, I had not washed the engine before. It's mostly just accumulated dust that makes it all look dirty. I removed the plastic engine cover as well, as it is simply held on by clamps.

how the hell do u bag the alternator? I never did this and all my cars are fine.
so that the water doesn't get into it when you hose down the engine. Why take the chance when you can cover it in 2 seconds? I was told to do this by the service technicians and the shop foreman and it just makes common sense not to wet a major electrical component.
Drew's right, it's just a preventative measure. IMO, it'll be just fine without bagging it, but I don't want to take that chance no matter how slight.[:)]
