I have an Interesting POLL: Door dings and parking.
How many of you are fed up of getting door dings and scratches from your wives' going to Target or Walmart almost every other day. My wife is a Target addict. She frequents the damn store every other day, rain or shine, open or close. The sad thing is that we never leave that place without spending at least $100.00. Then when you come back to your truck it's all ding'd up.
I am almost losing hope...am I the only one!!?!?!??

I hate that too ... maybe you need one of these.[:o)]
Re: LOL. Why don't you just let her use your beater car? :-)

When I go to Target, I park wayyyy out there...
So Do I, but sometimes there is an Acura NSX, BMW M3 that usually parks out there with you and atracts bad attention and the "scratchers" do us all in.
AAAARGGGGHHHH!!! I was once part of a "Group Scratching". It sucks!
I am religious about parking away from everyone and walking the extra 50 yards.

Until two days ago in SF when valet parking was the only option. I have never even scratched my car in some pretty hairy off-road situations. Leave it to Willie Brown Town to take care of me...
The scratch is down to bare metal.

Sorry to hear about your San Francisco experience...
My ML gets valet every day when I get to work in downtown. Because I park there everyday, I am super nice to those valet guys (I buy them lunch once in a while; gave each of them a $20 gift certificate, etc)! You think by paying $475/month, your car should be babied! No way jose! These guys have done the following to my car:
1) scratched the MB door sill;
2) dirtied the carpet (black stain) - driver side;
3) dent in the front driver-side fender;
4) fingerprints everywhere.
Have I filed a complaint? Nope. What would that do? (sigh...)
In regards to parking at Target, I usually hog two spaces in the far back of the lot. Actually, I don't shop at Target, but if I'm at Safeway or Albertson that's where I usually park.
That door ding protection pad sounds like a good idea, but isn't it easy to have them get stolen?

LOL!! I only posted it as a joke [:p]... I imagine people would steal it off your ML if you had one. It would be out there, free for the taking. Besides, it would look ridiculous and might even attract people to your car thinking, "What is that weird looking thing doing on a nice car like that?"
I agree with you guys, I think you just have to use some common sense. I would do what you guys suggested earlier. 1) Park far away from everyone, 2) Leave your ML at home and drive a beater, or 3) buy one of those talking (annoying) car alarms that warns people that they are too close to your vehicle. Don't park where someone can park in front of
you or behind you. I was hit in the rear this way
and there were two gouges on my lower back bumper.
At the time I had owned my ML500 for one hour.
Only 21 km on it. It's now fixed ($200).
Let the wife shop while you drive around, or sit in a far corner of the lot, glaring at anyone who drives near you. A big NRA sticker also helps to keep people away, particularly if you're in the car.

Seriously, I try to park far away, and when I get the inevitable dings etc., I *try* not to let it bother me too much. It's only money - you can always make more. The thing that annoys me even more than the dings from careless idiots, is a scratch or other damage done purposely by some worthless lowlife, who deserves to be killed painfully and slowly. (so much for no letting it bother me) [:)]
