I just installed Thule crossbars in preparation for a ski rack and the noise at over 40 mph is loud. Any ideas or suggestions about this situation would be appreciated. I would like to avoid the free advertising of Thule by using their windscreen.
that wind fairing is almost a must. it definately works in suppressing the noise. if you dont want to look like a thule advertisement, i'd suggest removing the logo. if it's like the yakimas, it's only a sticker.
Stewart, we should have a weekend excursion to the mountains in the Winter
Get a bunch of ML owners from around the area and head up there for some skiing. Conditions are supposed to be great! My friend has already skied Killington 3 times.

Return it, install the cheap $100 draw tite hitch and buy a hitch mount rack.
make a whistling sound from about 20-60 MPH, then a hurricane roar above that.
I tried moving them closer together, toward the back. That got rid of the whistling, but made the wind roar even worse.
Why is it that every other manufacturer can make a roof rack that doesn't make noise (and they can include it in the price of the car)? MB's is totally non-aerodynamic and costs extra. I'm less than impressed.

I've had other vehicles with roof racks and the crossbars all make some sort of whistling at certain speeds or wind directions.
I had a Grand Cherokee and an Explorer before this and neither one made much if any noise. Certainly not this noticeable. When I first got the ML, I took it back to the dealer, because I thought the door seals were leaking, causing the whistle. They told me to move the front crossbar back. I have to keep moving it around to find the optimal position.

Junky,
The hitch mounts make the skis VERY dirty from all the debris flying about. If you use a rear hitch, you must wrap/cover the skiis first!!! I will take the noise.
