Low Range Light Flashing

Occasionally when I start my ML (98)The low range light blinks 7-10 times then stops. Does this sound strange? I have never even used the low range gear setting. Could it be some sort of error in the computer? Has anyone else had this occur?
Thanks
Re: Low Range Light Flashing

This is definately not normal, and you should have it checked. You would know if it switched into low, but still it should not happen.

sounds like someone pushed the low range button :-)

Fairly common thing to do. Press it when it's not in neutral and symptoms are as you describe.
Press it once to disengage it.

My 2000 ML430 does the same thing... I have not touched the button to cause this. I tested LOW RANGE for the first time this morning and It did not function... I think.

I checked the manual before attempting. I was parked and in neutral, under 1500rpm. The LOW RANGE light flashed as it should put never came on solid afterward.

If it flashes two times and stays on, then the system is engaged, but I guess you already knew that. Look here for more info:

Let me guess?
Another sensor malfunction?
Even my youngest knows by now, that sensors are the problem 90% of the time.

True, but it could be the motor that changes the lo/hi I suppose.

I need to try engaging low-range sometime. I'm just afraid since it's been years since it was engaged, that I'll year some sort of weird mechanical thing, and a thing a loud crack.

I hope my parents somehow take me to a street thats really steep and requires low-range, then I can test it out. Don't feel like doing it in the driveway....Just takes the fun out of doing it.
