Unless I am wrong, the airbag goes off regardless, this sensor is only so it turns off for children in the seat. I'm hoping to just turn off that feature so the bag is on permanently and eliminate the light.
Not sure about that it sounds just as dangerous. You could get the car scanned and it will probably give you the code for the part that's necessary to replace. You could get it out of an old ML at the wreckers. The seats aren't that hard to pull apart. I would try investigate into it a bit more. Have you checked all the connectors on the seat.
I have a similar issue with the sensor. I believe there are two; occupancy based on weight and baby seat (rfid). Mine has an issue with the occupancy sensor. The sensor pad is not defective, it's the wiring coming out of the box. Theoretically you could repair the wire for no $. YMMV
I'd investigate further. The SRS system is in place for a reason. Many times it's the connector under the back of the passenger seat that comes loose. I am very hesitant to disable any restraint system device without being satisfied that it is not necessary and that there is no ability to repair it. Good Luck.
"If a severe frontal collision occurs exceeding second triggering threshold where protection from seat belt is insufficient, air bag is deployed. ETR is activated if seat belt is buckled. If seat belt is not buckled, ETR is not activated when second triggering threshold is reached. Passenger air bag will deploy even if passenger seat is not occupied when a triggering threshold is exceeded. During certain types of collisions, the air bags will be deploy, but ETRs will not be activated. "
Here's a picture of the sensor. (Not my pic)
I'm certain my malfunction is a break in the black wire. It would be worth taking it out to diagnose and repair. Too lazy so far to do it. I'll get to it one of these days.
If your certain check it out and do the repair. Checking it should be relatively simple with a continuity tester on the wire. Good Luck!
It could also be the switch in the seatbelt locking unit. My S class had that issue. It would stay on for approximately 30 seconds and shut off. Dealer made diagnosis. They wanted a ton of money to remove the seat and replace the unit. I was fine with it as it was because it locked and unlocked and as long as the light shut off it didn't make me crazy.
When I checked r last time, we started the car and I didn't have the seatbelt plugged in at all and it still came on so I assume it's not related to that.
I'll check using my MB II scanner and see if it'll read SRS and then I'll test continuity on that wire.
Because it's my moms car so I have had limited access to the car, either way thanks for confirming.
