During a recent brake job I noticed this. the boot on this ball joint to steering arm is ripped. How urgent is repairing it? Is this a DIY? Alignment needed after?
If you have new or great tires, I'd get it done soon to avoid fast premature wear. If tires are ready to be replaced soon, I'd wait 'till then - unless it obviously starts to fall apart. On my 500, bad ball joints ate my front tires badly and quickly, mostly on the inside. I wrongly thought it was an alignment issue. When I did mine at my local Mb shop, they said that alignment was not necessary. I had it done anyway, since I had just got new tires.
Since youre in Cali, it shouldnt be much trouble at all (in a rust state, unscrewing the rod end off the steering arm is awful). Just get a $20 ball joint popper from harbor freight and youre good to go.
I agree with Jim. I couldn't see any grease present meaning it has been torn for some time. I'd change it now. In fact I just changed both of mine because one while tight was squeaking and the other was badly worn. Good luck.
