So it has been quite cold here recently, and twice in the last 30 days I have had my coolant light come on. Each time I add coolant (50/50 mix with coolant purchased from dealer) I can see it going down a bit, then I get it to the line on the reservoir. I have added a little over half a gallon between both warnings. I do not see any leaks on the ground or on the engine. Oil looks good on the dip stick, temp gauge gets a hair over 80 during normal driving but not much higher than that ever. It is scheduled for an A service in a couple of weeks, what else should I look for, or is this considered normal? 203,000 miles and has had no major service issues.
Does it smoke when you start it? Is there excessive smoke when your running? Is there any excessive pressure build up or bubbling in the reservoir? These are all symptoms of a blown head gasket. Depending on how and where the fracture is will determine what the symptoms are that you are experiencing. Good luck.
Our ML320 started a mysterious loss of coolant that took me 4 months to figure out.
No head gasket issues. Hoses were all good. After a belt inspection I had a telescoping mirror out and noticed coolant residue on the inside of the water pump pulley.
So I let it get to full temp and shut off the engine. Put the mirror down there to look at the water pump pulley and sure enough a very slow drip into the pulley. The pulley has a lip on it so the coolant would stay in there and evaporate. Got a new Graf WP and changed the thermostat as well.
No coolant has been added since Feb of 2016 and the level is perfect.
Just got back from having an A service done. Looks like water pump gasket leaking and dripping on an idler pulley. Pretty much what @Noodles said. So for now gather some parts and get ready to try and tackle this myself 1018.51 quote from the dealer.
