Having this metal to metal like low squeal noise coming from the front area of the truck. This noise does not appear when at standstill and I do not hear this with the hood open. Any idea how to isolate the issue? I just replaced the belt and while doing so checked all the bearings and pulleys and did not find any noise/issue.
Could it be suspension related? bushings? It is not a constant noise but more like metal hitting a particular spot while rotating kind of squeal.
Brakes are not in the equation. I personally replaced them with genuine MB stuff last year and has been whisper quiet. Both pads and rotors have less than 5K miles. I suspect the noise is intermittent like not one continuous squeal, faint but can be heard with windows up and AC running. When rolling of a flat surface sometimes I hear it a little pronounced over bumps or cracks on the road. I have a hunch that it could be the suspension but don't know. As previously mentioned no noise at standstill.
Mine came from the passenger area. Took it to my indie who in my presence put the car up on the rack. Squeal noise was traced to a set of tie rod ends. Yes tie rod ends. The passenger side was frozen in place. Lubing it ended the squeal but I opted to replace both of them. No squeal now.
This is something that certainly could be a possibility, I have to check it out, will be difficult as I dont have a rack unfortunately. Thanks anyways.

I jacked up my car and check the outer and inner tie rods. Jerked them as well as tried to tug them as much as possible no squeak.
This is little irritating nuisance. I can hear the squeal occasionally as explained before from the inside with windows up and rolling at low speeds. I found out that I was not able to hear the noise with windows down at same speed. Sorry if this is confusing but it is perplexing for me as well..
Could it be from inside? Seats...etc etc any pointers will be helpful.
Bula - that is a possibility and I dont know for sure. With the truck up on jack stands I tried to jerk the tires as hard as I could. I could not see any play or noise and felt rock solid.
Lubricated them as well, noise still persists. I think I'm just going to turn up the volume of the radio and put this behind me unless the squeal becomes more pronounced....
In my world a squeal would have to be made from something turning. Have you checked drive shafts. I had a stone caught in a brake calliper once that made a bit of a squeal.

Yes you are correct, IMO it can also happen when two metal objects touch/rub each other either due to vibration or movement with no lubrication. Or would you call this something else?
I hear you. Probably that's what I'm doing or going to do and let the noise become more apparent. It is this inner urge of not being able to pin point the noise source is what bothers me more.
Alrigt after eliminating the wheel bearings, tie rod ends and ball joints I do think they are just fine I do feel this looks promising. I do agree with 113 K it does make sense somewhat to replace however I do not want to replace a functioning part without being able to be sure that that is the culprit. Just my way of doing things.
On the other hand by front U joints are you referring to the joint or the center shaft bearing please?
Ok did some fact finding and it looks like u need to replace the whole drive shaft as the U joint cannot be lubricated as it is sealed. Correct? Any DIY will help..
Any decent driveshaft shop will be able to help you. I'm assuming you have the 2 piece driveshaft with the u joint in the middle?
I removed my driveshaft and brought to a driveshaft shop for that very purpose. After 200K I figured new u joint and balancing were in order.....he played around with it for all of 2 minutes and pronounced it good for another 200K....."the OEM are always better than the replacement"
That....and there is no working staking machine in Toronto.
How the heck did I make it onto this forum, anyways?
