I'm hearing a lot of roaring noise from the rear of my '01 ml320. I have had the right rear hub bearing and rear diff replaced, but the noise is still there.
I have not had the left rear hub bearing replaced yet. Any ideas what could be causing this noise?
It has to be checked, of course but if it is the culprit, there might be some vibrations coming with the roaring noise. Tires can do this noise as well.
I agree with mattML430 on the center support bearing. What led to the diagnosis which resulted in replacing the rear diff? That must be very costly:frown
A mechanic told me that I needed a rear diff, so I bought one of of eBay. And yes, I should have replaced both rear hubs, but the guy at NTB (tires) said that the right rear hub was bad when I had new tires installed. Next time I'm taking it to a certified mercedes mechanic for a complete diagnostic.
In fact, I think that you should seriously consider going to an MB shop to have it "properly" diagnosed - pay whatever the fee is to have it diagnosed. After that, decide whether you want it to be repaired by the MB shop or an independent mechanic. So far, it seems like you have spent a large amount of $ working with independents who have not resolved the problem. Maybe an MB shop is your next best bet.
