In my last three fill-ups I have noticed that about 5-6 gallons are not getting into the extra tank that was added to the 55 to give a 25-gallon capacity. I pull out of the gas station with the gauge showing 'F' and within 2-3 miles the level moves steadily down to finally read just over 3/4 full. I have tried and tried to fill slowly to get both tanks filled, only to be cut off at the top of the fill collar.

Other than a blockage in the line between the tanks, are there any suggestions? Vapor recovery vent? Anyone have this problem? Is there an answer other than pulling both tanks?

.............Thanks!
I have an '01 ML430. I cannot get it to fill up all the way without at least 7-10 additional 'top-off' attempts. It seems to be a problem with too much back pressure to the pump. Someone once posted the MBZ has a recall/factory fix for this, but my dealers have not been able to find it.
As for your additional tank, where is it. Do you know if it can be added to the measley 19 gallon tank I have? Do you have to move the spare tire?
Spare Tire - - They moved it inside the car (which I removed)!
I do not think that you can modify the 430 (which I also own and also takes 1.5 gallons after first cut-off), since the AMG then has the exhaust after the auxilary tank. You whould likely need both tanks new to have them linked.

My problem is that I think that the line between the two tanks is failing because after the first cut-off, I rocked the car back and forth by grabbing the tire. I could hear the gurgling and would then add more without cut-off. Rock some more and add some more. This many times, avoiding any more cut-off. Finally it topped off to the fill neck and I stopped, AFTER I HAD ADDED 5 (five) MORE GALLONS!

I drove home (3 miles) and after dinner took my wife and girls bowling. On my road to my mailbox (1/4 mile), I stop on the upgrade and then move out to force gas from the main tank (with the fuel sensor) to the rear auxilary tank. Presto! My reading is DOWN 1/8 from full. That's my problem. Any suggestions. I have an appointment for the 12th, but the chief mechanic says that he 'has never seen a problem with AMG tanks, just the meter.' But they were the same ones that said that my car was suppose to shake because of the 'performance tires.' Mr. Tire found the 'irregular' AMG rim. Thank You, but I don't trust their experience with limited production vehicles.

I'll take any suggestions.

Re: Spare Tire - - They moved it inside the car (which I removed)!
How hard is it to remove the spare tire from inside? I just purchased an ML55 today and would like to remove the spare for more room.
thanks
You will need to cut a neat hole (enlargement) in the carpet to remove one bolt and then plug two holes with two tie-downs that you can buy (my saleman got them for me for free, since I did not want the car unless the wheel could come out neatly). I still have not found a neat plug for the hole in the wall. Oh well, maybe later.

Enjoy your new ML55, it's a great car. What color? Mine is the rare Bourbon (not with the now Designo option, but charcoal leather). Love it.

P.S. - Adrien, very important that you read my postings about Break-In and/or Mileage. Highlight my name, do a Cntl-c to copy, and Cntl-v to paste it for a 'Find' on several pages of this site. Enjoy!
What are you all doing for a spare if you take it out of the vehicle?

Man, I'd sure love to find a way to extend the range of my 430. I'm 300 miles, max!

The old 300D's were frequently fitted with an aftermarket diesel tank that gave them 650 mile ranges.
I will be removing the spare assembly today, thanks!
mine is the bordeaux red with charcoal interior. I will check out previous post from you in the archives,
Re: Spare? - - It's not "as" safe, anyway. Tow it home.
You won't find a replacement for the ML55's 285/50 tires easily. Take it home and then deal with it. It's rare that a tire goes bad now-a-days anyway. If I plan a longer trip, I make sure everything looks good before I start and if I plan to go off-road I can always pack the space along.

My ML430 gets under 300 miles a tank only in winter or when towing the boat (14.5 - 16mpg). The rest of the year we could go 320 - 400 per tank. The trick is I took 5,000 miles to break it in and used synthetic oil ONLY, taking the original oil out after 300 miles.

Maybe you can get the ML55 tank. Check with the dealer. Good luck!
