Anyone have any good stories of their ML? Most of this forum is dedicated to problems and repairs but why don't we talk about some good things for a bit. Some of us are young ML owners, some are older. I want to be able to take a ride in my ML and tell my kid (born in the future, I'm in college now haha) what great times I had in this vehicle. Times filled with memories, times filled with love. For me, this vehicle has been in my family since the day we bought it in 99/2000. I do remember being at the dealer and looking at the w163s. Although I haven't had the world of memories with my w163, it being in the family for so long along and it being my first car has made it very special to me. I like to keep her clean but getting her dirty all over again is just as rewarding. I look forward to many new, great memories!
So anyone have any great stories of their MLs? Tell us about the time it saved the day? or Tell us about the great journeys you have made in it! Why is it so special to you? It's story time, so let's hear some stories! (Pictures are encouraged) :grin
My favorite is being up in the Berkshires of New York, performing at a resort (I sing in a band). At 2:30am during load-out as I'm packing up, some drunk bozo in a pickup gets stuck in a snowbank. I offer to pull him out, and he laughs and looks at my ML like some fragile, fru-fru mommy mobile. But I say "Really, it's no problem", so he agrees. We get a rope, he hooks it to his vehicle, I to my tow hook. I put it in low range, bring the line taught and pull his much larger pickup truck out of the snowbank and back onto the road. He was impressed, as were several on lookers. :grin
Nice story. Try keep it for your kids. My son is ten and he wants mine for his first car. Not sure yet but if i still have it he can have it when i'm gone, or if i need a three wheeler.
I grew up in my ML. I have so many memories sitting in the back of the ML staring out the rear window. It was my mothers car for most of my childhood life until she got a W203 C240 Wagon and then the ML was passed onto my dad as his daily. After some years the ML was put on hiatus after it started having issues that my father could not fix and didn't want to spend the money on, so it sat in our garage for a long time. I brought it back to life and now spend most of my time in it again, this time in the drivers seat .
Hey mars Something in the back of my mind thinks since yours posts about you getting your car from your family etc.
I have not looked back at my or your posts mars but my memory tells me i may have not been kind to you when you were fixing your car up a few years ago. May be someone else. When i get time i will look it up and see if i owe you an opoligy.
We purchased our 99 as a one owner lease car from a dealer in Pasadena with 17,000 miles in late 2000. It now has 267K and lots of memories hauling 3 boys camping, skiing, grandmas, etc, so there are lots of memories which is why my wife couldn't sell as long as I keep it running. Anyway, the specific memory I'll throw in here is at one camping trip in the early 2000's while we were eating dinner, one of my son's suddenly looked up, pointed at the M, and said "Two Patrick's". Took a minute to figure out what he meant, but both 5 spoke wheels had come to rest with one point straight up making the wheels look like a certain pink character on SpongeBob :grin No, my wheels are not pink...
My story is the enjoyment I've had working and styling my ML to what it is now. I've had it know for about 7 years which is the longest I've ever had one single car and don't plan on getting rid of it anytime soon.
I've got to say I still enjoy hopping into the seat of the old girl even if it's to go 2 minutes down the road or a 10hr trip. As far as being reliable it's been great only time I got stuck was when the surpintine belt broke but I was 10 min from a parts shop and going again in an hour. Truth be told it should of been change long before that.
GOTTA LOVE THE OLD TRUCKS.
Also the great friendship with all the guys here is priceless.
i don't have alot of memories of my W163 as i have only had it for little over two years now, but the funny thing is how i bought it. my dad bought it as a second hand car from a dealer (i think) and he used it for about three years tell he saw a very nice Volvo XC-90 V8 which he just fell in love for (it was totalled by the insurance co. after a month, but thats another story), so he put it up for sale. a colleague bought the car from my dad, and a short time after he was transferred to another city, taking the car with him, where it stayed with him for 2-3 years. in 2012 (if i remember correctly) my dad's colleague want to sell the car because he, for some reason, wanted to get a VW Touareg. so my dad told me about it and encouraged me to buy it. to tell you the truth i was a little hesitant. European cars are not very popular here specially used ones, so i had to put alot of thought about maintenance and spare parts. you must understand, before the W163 i had a 2006 Mazda6 and it was a good car, but because i just had my son, and we all know how much protective we become and how much stuff we start to haul in our cars, i decided to buy it.
now i will not sell my W163 cuz it has everything i want from a car (except for an in-dash GPS/entertainment system), unless its a new model (W164 or later).
love this thread guys!
Well some of you know im just 17 and my 98 ML was passed down from my dad. My parents (at the time of the w163 purchase) were not very wealthy but my dad always use to talk to me about Mercedes and how much he wants one, Dad works in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia at a power station and chose to drive up and down every week from perth which is about 6.5 hours one way, after going through a few cars (holdens, fords and before the ML a lexus) having written off just about all of them in kangaroo accidents, he decided to invest in an ML because of the comfort and safety. My dad was a mechanic and has done everything from engine rebuilds to bodywork and this is where its all started for me. The car was purchased in 2004 or 2005 with 18,000kms on the clock (saw it in the logbook for a service in Perth that was the last time it saw a dealer ) and i learnt heaps throughout the years maintaining and learning about cars always helping him. In 2013 dad realized it was time for a new car, the ML racked up 550,000KMs passing the half a million milestone. (he didn't expect it to last) so for years of handwork caring for the car it was passed down to me! and ive been restoring it and making it new again in its 'golden years' wrenching on it making it mine my mum kept trying to get me to just get a new car but i was already hooked, so many fantastic memories with dad, always complementing it on how "good shes been" every one i talk to is blown away by the Kms the cars done and having not even done any major repairs just good maintenance. The car still pulls and puts smiles on mine and my mates face every time we thrash it around. Currently the cars got 556,230 Km's and in 26 days i will get my P's allowing me to drive alone, im really excited for some new memories to be made. #offroadMLtobe
That is awesome. Mine's barely run-in at 180,000 km.
What kind of fuel do you use? If it can go that far on 95 octane, I'm going to switch from 98 (which I have been using with the idea it'll maximize the longevity of my engine).
One thing I remember from being a little kid in the ML, my mother and I used to joke about the ML being a portal in which things go and never return. I believe my mother lost two cell phones in the ML and never recovered them haha. While logging things that I would like to fix in the ML I saw that the driver's door pocket is cracked and loose and if you look through the crack into the inside of the door panel there are a bunch of keys in there. Looks like I found one of the portals haha!
Our 98 ML320 is my daughter's ride - She's 20 and away at college now. We got it when she was 16, and one day after several weeks of looking at a cars & trucks she fell in love. We were taking it for a test drive with the seller in the back and I was about to start negotiating price when my daughter loudly exclaimed "I want this car dad, its the best one we have looked at - can we get it right now?"
Needless to say, the seller did not budge on the price and my daughter got her wish. She still loves it. :grin
yeah man its awesome, well dads always run 98 just to keep it clean plus you get the extra K's and so far ive been running it on 98 and she loves it!
P.S. 98 could be the secret because dads always run 98.
