in some trouble with the ml320, i bought a new power steering pump and it is still leaking out the fluid! seems like its coming from the rack and pinion, i got some seals from MB hoping it will fix the problem but it obviously didnt looks like i need a new one?
the major thing that i have is the ML keeps missing, i changed a fuel filter and it was really clogged, there was a wire that powered the pump that is corroded which i got a guy to rewire.
but its just running rough with a check engine light, hoping to get a scanner and see but last time i scanned it was pointing to bank 1 sensor 1.
when i go to start the benz, it used to start within a second, now all you hear is the starter turning, finally within a minute it starts.
the other thing too is when i did a oil change the guys told me there seems to be coolant in the oil
dont know what to do, scared it will break down with me again, took it to a few shops and they were not too sure whats going on with it but im really wondering if i need a new fuel pump?
whats your mileage ?
W163s are not the best Mercedes Model ever made
with that being said, the Mechanic has a vested interest in making you fearful.
Snap a pic and post it.
you wrote: "when i go to start the benz, it used to start within a second, now all you hear is the starter turning, finally within a minute it starts" - this sounds to me as if the fuel pressure is low.
here is a tip: before you start, turn the key twice so you can build the pressure. you should hear the fuel pump buzzing.
I do this with all my older cars- hope it helps.
also, keep you tank at least half full. hopefully your fuel pump is going bad....
it has exactly 290km on it right now, thank you for that tip i will be sure to do that tomorrow morning!! and i was at half in which i just filled it right up!
I'll be honest with you
the ML is getting closer to the end of its life.
more problems will occur.
the best thing you can do it keep up on your maintenance and Identify issues before they arise.
If you do not already do this; check your fluids (oil, Coolant, Transmission, brake, steering) weekly, keep you tank half full at all times; this will prevent excessive wear on your fuel pump. Use the best fuel available. keep your tires inflated to the correct PSI.
no aggressive starts or hard braking.
very useful facts and i agree with you towards everything, i am currently looking at getting a 2015 GL or a smartcar just to mess around for the time being, still have to shop around!
If it was just a creamy-ness on your oil cap and nothing else then you should be fine. ML's tend to get that from city driving. A nice highway blowout will get that out. However, if you drain your oil and find it to be of milkshake consistency then you have headgasket issues. I would check on that first, do a compression test and check the consistency of your oil. As for your hard start, what was your code? You might have a fuel pump problem or a problem of another sort. More members will chime in. If your headgasket is fine, and your fuel pump or whatever is the issue then your ML still has a lot of life left in it
My E500 gets the same gunk especially in winter when shorter trips are made and the engine does not run long enough to cook off the moisture that all engines get in them.
I have seen that gunk on brand new engines and our 280k mile engine.
it might not be so bad.
if you can get 2 more years out of the ML, you will be in a better fiscal position to get a GL or a newer ML.
The best car to have is the one without a car payment.
well guys, the ML is finally alive and well again! after changing the gas filter along with the fuel pump, it runs so much more better and i have noticed that i can drive a lot and it doesn't burn as much gas as it used to before this problem which is a huge plus! but on the sad note it seems like my gas gauge is stuck and wont move, i drove it a lot today and my father then i told him to top up on gas in which he went to shell and paid 1 buck Canadian to top it up! he was in total shock, must have been funny for the gas station guys seeing a person buy a dollar gas for such a big truck! haha would anyone have a idea as to why that is stuck? could it be because its a new pump and maybe needs some driving or something to get it going again? now the last thing on the list is to change a left side engine mount along with brakes, oh almost forgot i went to the dealership for the o-rings for the rack and pinion which stopped the leak but there is a humming noise when i drive but when i am at a stop light it goes away! i bought mercedes benz steering fluid in which i noticed the shop didnt use it and put in a red liquid, maybe that could be why?
then i would have to agree with you on that one, i had a friend of mine install it at his shop, maybe he forgot to line it up, will have to bring that to his attention because ever since it has been stuck at 3 quarter full! could anything else cause this to be like that?
It could be a dud of a part, or the arm for the float has backed itself out a tad from the pump body. Both cases are extremely rare compared to not lining up the marks.
