Wife hit someone from behind yesterday and did minor damage to the front. I'll post some pictures later. But I'm wondering since the only damage is to the front bumper only if replacing could be something I could do.

My friend who owns a reputiable boby shop says my cost for the bumper is ~$350 with about 2 hours labor to replace. He says that I could do it myself to save a little.

My question is has anyone taken off the front bumper to know what's involved in replacing it? With the front fog lights and washers I'm not sure I want to tackle this or not.

I've done it many times with other trucks that I had to install fog/driving lights but am a little apprehensive with the ML.
A 17-year-old kid backed into our front bumper cover Sunday night, causing a nice-sized dent. The M-B dealer is charging $364 to remove the bumper cover, remove the dent using heat, then repaint and replace.

I'm sure replacing the bumper cover would be more expensive.
Removing the front bumper is a bit more complex than the rear which only has 4 bolts to remove. If only the front bumper that is damaged, I would say it you could do it yourself, unless there is additional damage to the front bumper mounts which could have moved due to the accident.
Easy to do, sounds like you have some mechanical skill from previous work on trucks
The only thing that can make it more complicated is if there is damage to the bumper mounts and you need to replace or straighten them. If it is only the cover then very easy!
I will post the pictures I took later tonight.

However, the MB body shop wants $800 to replace/paint the new bumper. No other damage is done. But there seems to be some discrepancies with the part number for the 02 bumper. Parts give one number to outside body shop and the MB body shop has another that's only 1 digit different but $150 more. I'm going to investigate more this afternoon.

Should the 02 bumper be less than a 01 bumper?
You'll notice the two cuts in the top and the missing small lower grill.
I think its not hard to replace it your self. I have a suggestion though, Why don't you just order the bumper have them painted and install it yourself.
its actually very easy.. i worked on several ml's doing bodywork.. and to access the bumper you have to remove the headlights, and remove the license plates (hex).. the long thin black plastic grill (held by clips), than any bolts you see holding it down should be same as the ones used to hold the headlights .. there are two bolts where you access from the head light area and it requires a extension for the 3/8' socket.. if u are stuck let me know.. there is a temperature sensor that you ahve to unplug when you remove the bumper... its between the middle and right side of the bumper.. just remove any bolts you see holding the bumper in place! and do the reverse to assemble it back.. should take less than 1/2 hour to remove
I have the light washers and I'm worried that may give me some headache because I can't see how the attach to the bumper. Also the fog lights are there but I'm not too concerned about them.
