Halogen bulbs have a curious property of being able to self-repair. If the 2 ends of the broken filament remain aligned, they can reform a working circuit. When the bulb is switched on, tungsten in the filament evaporates to be redeposited when it's off.
This may explain the so-called fix of thumping the dashboard for a faulty instrument cluster globe.
