I just purchased a trans dipstick tool. Got it from partsmonkey.com
After driving home from work in traffic for almost 1 hr, I decided it was a
good time to check the trans fluid.
I've been having some issues with rough downshifts from 2nd to 1st.
Resetting the tranny method would only work for a couple of days.
So I contacted the previous owner and he told me that Mercedes did a tranny
flush 2 years ago (approx. 10,000 km/ago)....
With the truck in park and running, I checked the fluid and this was my result:
(pic below)
How low would this be approx.?
It's suppose to be between min-max 80 degrees?
Driving for an hour doesn't guarantee the fluid is at 80C. Cold ambient air is being pulled through the radiator and the trans cooler is in there. No thermostat in the transmission, either, so you're just guessing at fluid temp.
I would wait until morning and start it, as soon as it's at a normal idle recheck the fluid on the 25C scale. Add small amounts of fluid until it's just over the low level for 25C.
Don't get me wrong, the 80C scale is the one that matters at the end of the day. But you need to have a good starting point, and since you have no idea about the fluid temp, best to be conservative. And the 25C range is not to be ignored, either.
Yep. I'd definitely be adding some proper-spec fluid. You don't want to get much over that 25C low level line, but that will get you started in the right direction.
If that then resolves your symptoms, you are probably okay not worrying about the 80C range, but if you want to worry about it, we'll chat later. But for now add a bit, I'd do it in increments of just 50-100 ml at a time, then recheck.
The 134 is the current spec fluid for your transmission. Whether you buy it in an MB bottle or something else, if it says 134 you're good to go. The fact that it was flushed just a couple of years ago is a good thing, too, since it would have been flushed with the 134.
Wow, $23 for 1L of MB ATF-134....highway robbery
No wonder lots of Mercedes enthusiasts are getting rid of their older Mercedes.
And that's why there's less w163's around (atleast here in toronto).
Mercedes should not be charging so much for their ATF. (sorry, just venting……arrrgg)
When you next need a fluid change, check into the Shell. Here you can buy it directly from a distributor for roughly $5/qt in cases. It's also readily available in smaller quantities via ebay, but I don't know what shipping is like up to the Great White North.
OTOH, if you only need part of a liter, done and done and you're back in business for $23. That's not the worst outcome, right?
Also, while I was at the stealer ship, I approached a service advisor to ask him to book me an appointment for my ML55.
I wanted to get my key/fobs sync’d to my truck. Now that it’s getting really cold here in TO, I have problems sometimes getting into my truck because the key lock/cylinders are frozen.
The advisor told me that this is approx a 2hr procedure and that they are really busy and they can’t see my car till December. WTF…………….
Basically, as soon as he found out (service advisor) I was driving an older Mercedes, he did not give any interest to me……
I had this procedure done years ago on my ML320 and it took like 15 min…….
I’m really really upset at the dealership and especially with this certain individual……..
Later on in the day, I called and spoke to the service manager..
When they found out that my family has purchased new vehicles from that MB location, they immediately called back and apologized…..
Not to mention, so much money in parts…..
Funny thing, they still did not give me an answer on when they can sync my keys......
So Mad!
I apologize for my venting...........................
I got mine in the Shell bottle for 7.00 per quart from Wolfe trucking but because of how Shell packages it ( no seal on the bottle) it leaks all over the shipping box and no one wants to handle it. Tried to get it from Wolfe and they told me they won't carry it anymore because of that very problem.
Yes the bottle cap seals were intact and unbroken but the bottles had leaked all over the shipping carton. When you held the unopened bottle up to light you could see the level was down. I'm still looking for another supplier because a little more than half a bottle at 7.00 bests a full bottle for 20+. I was that upset that I called Wolfe and the information that I was given about shipping with no inner seal being the reason for no longer handling it I posted. I believe you can ship nitroglycerin as long as you're careful and it appears that FedEx is the leakiest and UPS is the driest.
