Re: What is a hydraulic lifter and how does it works.
As opposed to a mechanical lifter, a hydraulic lifter operates at zero clearance, as the lifter body rest on the cam it is charged by the oil pressure of the engine, the pressure is kept by a check valve, working on the principle that oil can not be compressed the plunger inside lifts or pushes the valve as the body is riding the cam lobe, a certain rate of oil leak is built into each design, the charging and leak rate allows the plungers to adjust to cam wear and other valve components and gap disparities due to temperature changes.

The simplest I can get, hope it helps.
