This is from my wife's observations so it may not be as accurate as it should be.
She says when she comes to a stop the 02 ML55 the brakes seem to stop working and the engine almost dies.
No dash lights come on and I did a simple scan with my OBD tool and no codes come up.
Sounds like I've got a vacuum leak somewhere but thought I'd look for some advice here first.
Thanks!
I didn't hear anything when I drove it.
However, forgot to mention that wife said the brake pedal also seemed to drop down (I guess more than usual) when everything was happening.
Interestingly enough my buddy had similar symptoms and replaced the brushes in the ABS unit. Problem solved.
I'm going to go this route first. Brushes are only $8! LOL!
You will not loose brakes because of the ABS unit. Do yourself a favour dont touch the ABS unit. You can drive the car without ABS functioning and you still will have your normal brakes. There is something else wrong. Try to scan the car with a pro level scanner
Art,
Thanks for the advice but you're wrong here.
What's happening is that the ABS unit is turning on and off and causing the weird braking.
Technically, that's what happens when you slam on the brakes and the wheels start locking up. ABS detects this and prevents it from happening.
But what's happening now is that it's going into action WITHOUT any emergency braking happening.
You're right, if you disconnect ABS then the car defaults to the "regular" braking system.
But in this case, ABS is still functioning and malfunctioning.
Renn in your first post you were saying that the engine almost dies & you have no brakes.
In post No 8 you are telling us a totally different issue.
Is the car braking on its own? Please tell us in detail what exactly is happening
Art, I also put a caveat in there that said those were my wife's comments and may not have been as accurate as I (or anyone else) would like them to be.
Regardless, I'll report back on how the brush install goes.
If that doesn't solve the problem then I'll move on to other alternatives.
Good luck.......
P .S. If the brushes were gone you would have had the ABS/ESP,BAS/ETC lights on.
Plus there would have been a code on the scanner.
