Issues with Programming Replacement Key ML500 2003

I paid $130 at the dealership to get the new key for my ML500 as original keys were misplaced. In the interin I have been using the spare Mickey Mouse key I bought a few years back from MB. When it can for programming ($65), SA told me that that new key cannot be programmed as sensors in the truck are bad and I will have to pay $350 to get them replaced. When I try to start with new key, it gives start and error on dash and egine dies immediatly as it starts.

If my spare key is working how can the sensor module be bad? Is there a chance that replacement key is bad? I asked the dealer to get a different key to eliminate this issue. He does not want to try that as it will cost him for the new key niether they will take the key back even if it is not working.

Is there anywhere else I can go to get this verified or is there any troubleshooting I can do to determine the issue? Please help!

Your dealer is not playing nicely. I had mine return a key. No hassles.

Your logic is sound that if the MM key is working the DAS ring sensor is working. If not
it should be able to be diagnosed via the Star Diagnosis system. I would talk to the
service manger and if it comes to it tell him you will be contacting Mercedes and looking
for another dealer.

Have a serious talk with the manager\owner of this dump! He is clearly trying to get your $350 for free. I hope you paid with a credit card, it is none of your business that he doesn't want to take the new (supposedly not working) key back...
Is there another dealer close?

All I can say is WTF? They must have programmed the key wrong to start with. So of course they are at fault, stand by you guns on this, they are trying to cheat you.

Thanks a lot for your help and suggestions. As suspected, issue was with the replacement key. I went back to the dealer with all this info and he ordered a new key which worked fine.

Yeah, i'd like to know which dealer is charging only $65 to program? i just called two dealers in the Bay Area for a new key for my 2005 ML500...one dealer quoted $120 for the key + $165 for one hour labor to program the key. The other quoted $220 for the key + $165 for one hour labor to program the key! I will live with one key for now!

The truth is that it takes them less then 5 minutes to program the key. I bought one 2 month ago with the MB coupon ($100 off) and spoke with the service manager about the programing. I told him that I cannot come during the week and I cannot wait around for hours because of a injury I had several month ago and I cant sit on their chairs.
He told me, no problem, takes less then 5 minutes anyway just show up on Saturday and he will let the SA in charge know about it.
I showed up next Saturday and ask one of the SA to program the new key and that I talked with the manager. He said it will take about 2 hours and I should just wait.
I told him that I had a conversation with the manager just 2 days ago and it will only take 5 minutes and not to worry.
This SA tried to give me a attitude but I didn't take it. I told him I want the key programmed in 10 minutes and thats it.
I got the key and car back in 7 minutes and drove off!
Many dealers and SA's are simple shysters, at least this one just charges 1/2 hr labor for the 7 minutes.
