Brakes Screeching

Happy New Year Everybody. Over the Christmas break, I changed the front pads and rotors on my wifes ML 500. I used MB rotors and Wagner "premium" brake pads from Advance Auto which were listed as OE replacement. I also put the gel on the back of the pads. The brakes sounded fine at first but then after they warmed up they started screeching terribly. Does anybody have any suggestions? Should I have bought the MB pads as well or should I just switch to a different material for the pads? Thanks.

I just experienced the same problem with new pads and rotors and a MB mechanic told me to grease up the inside of the calipers with grease and reinstall the inside pads. I did them on my ML320 and the screeching sound went away completely. Good luck!

There are lots of threads on this problem. Search is your friend.

I had an unbearable screeching problem on my 01. Pulled the pads, cleaned everything, and carefully applied the correct silicon paste following the MB tech guide to this problem. This solved the problem for a while, but in a few weeks they were as bad as ever.

Replaced the pads with Akebono Euro pads. Game over. Perfectly quiet, good pedal, and tons of bite. Its all about using the right pads IMHO.

Do a search for the pdf on the correct application of the MB brake goo. In single use disposable packs its like $3 at a dealer, or the full tube (lifetime supply) is like $16.

The proper application per the application guide you will find is along the side/edges of the backplate, a schmear on the back of the plate is just my thing.

Keep the faith !

Brake goo is NOT a magic cure to brake screeching. I had the goo applied liberally to my Mercedes-branded pads, and they still screech.

The only real fix is to buy pads that are inherently quiet. I will be swapping out my Mercedes-branded pads with Akebono Euros this week.

That's what I found too. I was uber careful with cleaning up the calipers and applying the MB paste according to the MB application guide. Major fail after a few weeks. Akebono Euro pads completely solved the problem. Game over.

When a manufacturer like MB deals with a generic problem on the W163 model by releasing a special 'W163 brake paste' you have to wonder, expecially when several after-market vendors make pads that just plain work without squeeling.

Thanks for the responses

So I should get different pads? I talked to the MB parts guy today. He said that I should use the MB pads because they have less metal in them. The aftermarket ones have too much. How much do those pads that you are recomending cost? Thanks

Akebono Pads

Also, are those akebono pads ceramic? The MB parts guy said they do not recommend ceramic. Thanks

My Mercedes-branded pads wore through the front rotors with one set of pads , so the other pads could hardly be worse.

New rotor thickness : 32.0 mm
After 1 pad set: 30.2 mm
Rotor minimum: 30.0 mm

Hello DelJ,

Do you know whether the Akebono Euros are ceramic or semi-metallic?
