ok i will bite on this one
why is there a cable attached to the rear mud flap ???? backed up over a plastic yard chair ( @#&&%@@@ kids ) and knocked it off i reattached it no problem but was in a hurry and was hoping to just toss it in the back and reattach it later but that darn cable was in the way, anyway its back on but now its killing me why the cable for the mud flap ??

it looks like a bicycle breake cable but the thickness of a ballpoint pen with the lead cylinder at the end of the cable just like on a bicycle cable. i am guessing its there to retain the mudflap incase its pulled off ?
its the red arrow in the attached diagram

Maybe it's supposed to keep the bumper from flexing out. They're pretty flimsy and at speed the mud flap might tend to pull the bottom out into the air stream. The cable would prevent it from flexing out. Just a guess though.
^^^ that's right. It bolts to the cross member or a frame, can't remember now, to keep the mudflap in place. Without it mudflap will hang only on the bumper.
