I was at the dealer and saw a new ML320 2002, I happened to park right next to it and when I look at the tailgate panel it seems that the filler panel piece fit on my ML 320 which is a 2001. Because my ML is side by side, I look carefully at the thickness and also the corners if it will fit. I eye ball the details and I was almost confident that it will fit. I ask the part dept if they had that piece available so that I can fit in and if it fits I would buy it. But the dealer don't have the part available.
Anyone knows if this panel will fit the previous years?
Heh, funny because I did the same thing when I first saw the '02s. It will fit, however, I don't think that it will be flush like the '02's are. The thing is that the '02's rear bumper protrudes outwards a bit more, so the filler piece works out well. If you add it to the pre-'02 models, it may not look quite as nice because the top portion of the bumper does not stick out as much. I'll have to remember to bring a tape measure one of these days.
They are from the 500 but I think it is the same. On of these days I will get the head light photo's for you Drew.

One with a clear ruler (sorry, metric only).

And here is an unobstructed view.

I have a ML320 2001... and one day I lowered my garage door while the tailgate was open.... It up a deep scratch on the rear tailgate at the very bottom.. to repaint the tailgate was about 650-800... plus I was not sure if it was worth it... because it was not that noticeable..... to everyone as it was to me... So I saw this piece on an 2002 ML... and figured out it would cover the scratch.. so I purchased it... it fits perfectly... except it is a little thicker than the bumper trim piece... but hardly noticable.. and $200 vs $800 a better solution for me... Oh one other thing it comes pre-painted and it screws on to the tailgate it is not attach by some adhesive.
Peter,

Glad to hear you were able to take care of your blemish. How much wider is this trim piece? I like the look that the 2002 trim piece does to the liftgate. But, if the width of the trim has too much overhang, I would pass on adding this to my 2001. Also, can you tell me where you got it (dealer)? And, what is the part number they used?

thanx,
pmo
Hey I am glad to know this, if it is only a slight thicker, I wouldn't mind. I like that open space to be filled, IMO, it looks better. Thanks for the info, I am going to order from the dealer asap ))
Looks like the piece is about 3.5 centimetres wide. I measured the bumper 'ledge' for my own vehicle, and it is about 3 cm, so the filler piece would stick out by at least 0.5 cm. I'm not so sure how look this will look, at least from the side. Brabus actually makes a filler piece specific for pre-'02 MLs. However from what I've heard, it's a tremendous rip-off.
