Windscreen demister
Now the colder weather has hit the UK I pressed the button to demist the front winscreen, the one above the recirc button in the middle of the fan speed dial, the fan kicked up its speed and air came out of the windscreen vents but only for around 20 seconds - it then started to blow into the car from the air vents either side and in the middle of the dashboard. I tried to change this manually using the selector dial but at any fan speed over four the air seems to divert from the windscreen to the dash vents. I switched off and tried again with much the same results. I have monitored this and it seems to happen maybe 8 out of 10 times so it is intermittent - anyboby else experienced anything similar and found a fix?
I have exactly the same problem on my 05' ML500 again in the UK so RHD. Searched previous posts and thought it would be dead accessible and an easy repair from all the pics and details i found.
Unfortunately the entire system is reverse in a rhd car, so the 3 motors to control the distribution flaps are on the right side of the trans tunnel. I dissasembled the lower part of the dash/knee panel, and to get to the motor that controls the centre vents and demister the handbrake (or to our friends in the US E-Brake) bracket assembly must be removed.
This put me off so i still need to tackle it, especially with the cold weather at the moment. Also not entirely sure if the part mo's where the same on a RHD car since its reversed. Was gonna take the old part off before ordering the new one.

QUOTE=FAR888;3241098]Not making light of your problems gents but what is this cold weather and need for this windscreen demister contraption of which you speak?[/QUOTE]
In my neck of the woods today it is minus seven degrees centigrade with 2 inches of hard frozen snow (white stuff on the ground)
Hi,
I replaced the defogger lever which is the broken plastic lever on the driver side on my lhd ML. It should be easier for you because there is more space to work since your ML is rhd.
Check to see what you need before you buy parts. It may just be the broken lever. Now that I did the job once I can see it is about 5 minutes to get the part out and another 10-15 minutes to get it back in.

Yes it is on the drivers side (left hand) for a LHD car, but on RHD cars it is on the right hand side of the car. Also since the Parking foot brake is still on the left of the footwell all of this bracketry is in the way of the parts. Basically much more difficult for RHD cars.
