Engine Knocking after Oil Change - PLease Help!

Hi, I changed my oil for the first time yesterday. I do not know what kind of oil the last person was using (since it was bought used from a dealer). However, I used 10W40 Mobil 1 High Mileage to replace it.

After I changed the oil (as well as filter - Mann OEM), I drove the car back into the garage. I did not hear knocking at this time.

Then today when I used the car for the first time, I hear knocking.

The knocking did not start immediately upon starting the car. I only hear the knocking sound about 90 seconds after start up. When I drive it, I can still hear it.

When I am standing outside the car, I cannot hear the knocking sound.

When I get into the car and close the door, I can hear the knocking sound.

In addition, I do not know if this is normal or not since I never paid attention...but I think I can hear a very faint high pitch near the cat. as well if I really put my ear under the car...

Please help? What if the last person used mineral oil...would this be the reason I am experiencing the problem since I used M1 fully synthetic now? Or could it be another problem?

The car runs perfectly fine, but I am worried nonetheless.

I would suggest...

If you are concerned:

1) Check the oil level right away. With the correct top side oil pull out (since the oil drain is to the side on the oil pan, with the old oil propoerly pulled out or drained to the side, with filter change the correct oil amount is exactly 8.5 qts - if you used a oil change shop, sometimes their system shows the wrong oil ammount, and the 8.5 quarts for MB is a bit more than what they are used to.

2) Note the corrrect synthetic per MB is ONLY Mobil One European Formula 0W-40. The oil galleys in the engine especially to the head are really/really small. The proper oil supposedly prevents sludge buildup long term. No one short term like this situation have reported a short termm problem with the wrong oil, but there are supposed long term issues (at least that is what MB infers). This is common oil spec for almost (if not all) European designed engines since '99-2000, and MB has been specific on this for their engines.

3) If your oil is down a bit, then consider topping off with Lucas Synthetic oil stabilizer for this oil change (bought at any major auto parts store or Walmart) which will help thru one oil change to gently disolve some of any accumulated crud.

4) The get back to correct oil next oil change, no problemo.

Ditto on fabbrisd1's reply, especially the 0W40 (not 10W40) part. I would suggest you redo the oil change immediately using the correct weight and check the quantity.

It won't hurt anything to follow the above recommendations. Plus if you are really worried send the old filter in for an oil analysis. They are cheap and worth every penny.

From what I've read using dino oil won't hurt anything as long as it is changed at least twice as often as the original recommendation. In fact there is evidence that at least for alternate oil changes it can be superior to running synthetics solely for cleaning sludge in low flow areas (reference FAA research in the matter).

Note that the knocking could be something else (heat sheilds, motor mounts) that is more noticeable when the engine is running slightly rough when cold.

Check your oil level, it might be low which will cause the knocking sometimes.

hi guys - thanks so much for the responses. the oil is at the proper level (just slightly below MAX) but I did put in 8.5 quarts of oil when I changed it.

now, the "tuck tuck tuck tuck tuck" rapid sound seems to appear only about 90 seconds AFTER start up....when I drive it, i couldnt hear any of the sound. then only sometimes when I stop a red light, I could hear that "tuck tuck tuck tuck" rapid sound. it seems the sound is coming from the area closest to the windshield around the spark plugs area....

should i change Mobil 1 10W40 High Mileage to Mobil 1 0W40 NOW??? or might this be a big problem other than oil grade? I have no warranty on the SUV. As for the Lucas oil stabilizer, I read somewhere that it causes too much bubbles in your engine? I'm confused and still worried...any more advice guys?

Start your car, adjust the temp and vent settings and then listen if there is any noise coming from the vents above the radio, a broken mixer valve makes the tock tock noise... if yes do a search on this site, this was covered many times before.
If not at least you eliminated this issue.

Update your profile so we know what you are driving..

I wouldn't worry about the oil right now or add anything to it, wouldn't be surprised if you had 10w 30 in it if you bought the truck from a non MB dealer, just change the oil when you have time, filter too, other people may have different opinions about that....

Hi Wolfwinter, I took your advice and tried to listen for that broken mixer. Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like its a broken mixer. It is coming from the engine...the top portion that is closest to the windshield.

Today, I will redo the oil change. I will replace Mobil 1 10W40 HM to Mobil 1 0W40.

I will post an update whether that got rid of the noise.

please keep as informed if there is any changes after oil change-i was thinking about switching from 0W-40 to 10W-40 because i am getting close to 90 K miles.

I got rid of the ticking when I switched to Mobil 1 10W40.
