ML won't shift out of "Park"...

For some reason I can't get my sister's ML to shift out of park. I'm trying to get it out of our garage and the shifter won't move. I daily drive a manual but last I checked in order to put an automatic into gear you press the brake pedal and shift it into the correct drive setting. Any ideas why the car won't shift out of park? Does it have something to do with a bad sensor not recognizing the brake is pressed? Any suggestions or help would be GREATLY appreciated, we can't have this car stuck in our garage...

Problem is most likely failure of brake light switch located juts behind the brake pedal. There are instructions in the user manual how to manually switch gear out of the Park. Drive to MB dealer and buy a brake light switch. Cost is around $20. Search the forum. It is very easy to replace takes about 15 minutes.

So many people do not have an owner's manual and those who do don't even read it.

Could be a much bigger problem in the shifter if it got wet.

Why don't we all at least help him move the truck out of his gararge first as he desires?

Using a ball point pen, insert it into the small hole at the bottom of the gear shift panel and you should be able to move the gear from "Park" to other positions as a temporary measure till you can buy the brake light switch.

Let us know how you get on.

Do not drive the truck as you will have no brake lights.

Thanks for the help guys!

I've actually been out of the country for the last couple weeks and I'm just now getting around to taking care of the Mercedes. So what exactly is a brake switch? Would it be completely unnecessary for me to bring the car to the dealership to have this done. I do lots of work on my own car and I'm thinking it'd be wiser to do it myself.

How hard is the fix? Are there any DIY threads on here?

Thanks a ton for the link! After a quick read through, it's very apparent what a poorly designed setup Mercedes has implemented in the M-Class. Guess I'm heading to the dealership tomorrow to buy the replacement.
