I have ML320, 1998 and water pump shakes but doesn't leak yet. Planning to replace it myself. I did some research and found all necessary torque specs for water pump bolts but nothing for thermostat. Does someone know what they are?
Any tips on performing this DIY are welcome. What would be a good tool to hold a pulley while making the fan bolt to loose? I am aware that it is right-hand treaded and 36mm in size.
The torque setting for the thermostat are 14Nm or 10 ft. lbs. or 124 inch lbs. If you are going to replace the thermostat, please get it at the dealer, because it is a one piece design along with the housing. Don't get an aftermarket thermostat; something as important as this, you don't need this closing up on you causing it to overheat.
If its the pulley on the water pump that is shaking the bearings are shot and failure is immenent. I would not drive it until its changed or you will be stuck somewhere you do not want to be.
