Hey folks, Let me start by saying "Another one bites the dusk". My 02 ml320 fail to start yesterday. I've Never heard of, or have experience this problem before. After joining this site I read just about everything i could find on this start error/key Problem. I Went back up to the car where it failed (I was hopeing to get it started so I could get it home) removed the battery and tried to start it again. Just like the forum said, 3 tries and it was over. I tried both keys to no avail.Only other option was to call the tow truck. They picked it up today headed to the shop. Called the Benz dealer, they said very proudly.."Sure, bring it in, we can surley fix it!"(I could hear the cash register in the back ground, chig, chig) I called my Certified Benz import shop that has been doing all the work for the last 3 years. He said" Naw, never have heard of that before, but you know we will take care of you, bring it in" Man, I tell you.. It's not looking good either way. let me say, I've only had one problem with the small SUV since I've had it(back seat got suck in the down position) Cost me about $300 to get it up and new cable. So I guess I am due. I will let you folks know my out come.....Oh, I took it to my Import guys.
There are a number of things that could cause a no start, but one suggestion is that you check the odometer window on the instrument cluster and if it says START ERROR in place of the mileage, then no repair shop can fix the problem. It is the DAS (Drive Authorization System) which can only be purchased and coded by a M/B dealer. Before your mechanic starts replacing parts to try and get the truck running, it would be financially beneficial to you both, if you find this out as soon as possible.
Drive Authorization System (DAS). It's not cheap. Luckily, the DAS is separated from the AAM in 2001. If it were a pre 2001 model, you'd been out some much bigger bucks. I think this repair is between $700 to $900.
Sorry, 43sqd. I was doing a DAS search while you posted your response.

You know Mitch, these problems are popping up quite often, and I really feel for these guys who have the first version, which only seems to be a money maker for Mercedes. I still can't understand why they couldn't just issue a recall and end this nightmare. I guess they have very large checkbooks and can out wait anyone in court. That's why it is very hard fighting them.

I expect to hear even more as these trucks get older. I wonder if reporting this start fault to the NHTSA as a safety issue would do any good? A non-starting vehicle is potentially life threatening, especially if it happens after hours in a less than nice neighborhood.
