From the past discussions, I was thinking it's going to be lot more than that. It's good to know that the worst case scenario for replacing DAS is around $400.
You have to understand that that was the price he received from an obviously honest dealer. We can only tell by comparing prices from other dealer in other parts of the country.

On the other hand, he did get charged 220$ for 0.5 hr of
labor. From the TSB, the DAS problem looks like a software
issue. This would require only reprogramming of a ROM chip
on the DAS module.
Perhaps, MB is refurbishing them (?).

Here's an older bulletin about starting problems. The 98 and 99s dont show "Start Error" in the instrument cluster, but just flicker the LED when authenticating the key.

No fault codes stored in ME control module.

Remove starter motor.
Apply a thin coating of grease (part no. 000 989 76 51) to the starter motor ring gear. Use only the grease specified and be sure not to apply too much grease which could adversely affect the signal pick-up of the L5 position sensor (also know as crankshaft position sensor, CPS).

Reinstall starter motor.

For warranty, please use Damage Code 03024 08.

43sqd, I understand what you are saying. But, I gather from the posting, the list price for DAS module is $170.94. Just for that part, how can any other dealer charge more than the list price?

The list prices for any item should be uniform throughout the country, but they aren't. Each individual dealer seems to charge whatever he likes for parts and labor and M/B could care less. The only time they care is when the work is done under warranty because they have to pay the dealer for parts and labor.

You can see the disparity in parts and labor, in other threads, where one member says he paid $xxx for a certain repair and another member will say that he paid more (or less) for the same exact repair. Prices and labor are not uniform, but they should be. It all comes down to 'what the traffic will bear'.

In this particular instance, I was referring to honesty because at least the member wasn't sold a bill of goods that he needed the DAS, the AAM and new keys to go along with the already existing problem.
