Drive Authorization System (DAS). It's not cheap. Luckily, the DAS is separated from the AAM in 2001. If it were a pre 2001 model, you'd been out some much bigger bucks. I think this repair is between $700 to $900.
Sorry, 43sqd. I was doing a DAS search while you posted your response.
The start error TSB covers all ML's 2000 - 2005 with the same control
unit A1645450716.
Replacement time is only 0.5hrs so it looks like a simple fix.
The bulletin you posted covered all ML's 2000 - 2005.
What is circuit 15 ?
Circuit 15 pertains to the circuit 15 relay. Another name for it is the power distribution relay, in that after it is activated it powers up many fuses and modules.
Circuit 15 relay is constantly power by battery voltage and is permanently grounded, but is only activated after the AAM sends power to the coil side of the relay, after the AAM is powered up by the #15 prong on the ignition switch.
Is it possible for this "error" to occur while driving? Or only prior to startup? My ML has been stalling and 1 in 10 times actually shutting down at idle then has "Start Error" in the odometer but restarts everytime.
Ok Folks, here’s the deal, Picked the ML320 up this morning. It’s fixed and starting just fine. Shop replaced Drive Authorization Module (FBM), said I should not have anymore problems with it. Total COST…..$411.99. 2 things…. (1) I was expecting it to be much more, I’m glad it wasn’t. (2) After going up and down this site it is obvious that MB knows that this is a problem. It is very disappointing that they (MB) has not MANNED-UP and took responsibility for this issue. I know a RECALL can be very costly, but it also says that the company cares and is concern about their customers. It is definitely, definitely! sending the wrong signal to the consumer. When you charge as much for an automobile as they do, you should not have to worry about MB having your back. This is poor, one might encounter something like this from Kia or Hyundai….but it’s unacceptable from Mercedes Benz. Someone needs to be fired!

The "Start Error" notification in the odometer window is reserved for the DAS module. It will get worse with time, so if I were you I would have it changed.
Can you please post the part numbers and prices that you have on your invoice/receipt..?
It is always helpful to know what parts are necessary to change for people that have the same problem but for dealers who want to change, and charge, more that they should to fix the problem..

I know the part number is 163 545 07 16 but do not know the price, but you have to agree that he must have run into a very honest dealer for that price.
Yeapp..!! That's a great overall price for that kind of repair...

From the past discussions, I was thinking it's going to be lot more than that. It's good to know that the worst case scenario for replacing DAS is around $400.
