Problem: rapid up-down rpm at idle

Hi, guys!
My 1999 ML430 developed a problem after I accidentally left the lights on and had to jump-start the car. Engine RPMs rapidly going up-and-down every 1-1.5 seconds. Engine sort-of making VROOM-VROOM sound. Pressing on accelerator pedal has no effect whatsoever. I've tried to disconnect the battery hoping to reset the computer, no luck. BAS/ESP light is on. and trying to clear it turning the steering wheel left-right-left did not work. CHECK ENGINE light is OFF.
What could be the culprit and what can I do, other then have it towed to dealer for diagnostics?
I'll really appreciate your advice.
Thank You!

Vladimir

Remove the neg. battery cable again for 2-3 mins. then reattach. Turn the key to the run position, but do not start the truck, after two mins. slowly depress the gas pedal and slowly let it up. Turn the key off and then start the truck, but do not rev the engine, let it idle on its' own for a while so it can go through the relearn process.
