Slight smell of oil inside the cabin...

My wife and I have been noticing this slight smell of burnt oil inside the ML cabin. To the point that we needed to put the recirculating mode for the AC. Mostly when we start driving.

Well yesterday after opening my hood to check some other issue, I found that my ignition coils on the passenger side of the V8 engine, had some oil wetness, and that this wetnes had been sipping all the way down to the spark plug are and the heat was causing it to slightly burn..

I would guess it is the valve cover leaking. This weekend, I will clean my coils/plugs and wash my engine to see where that oil leak is coming from and how bad it is..

Sorry to hear that AC - What does your intuition tell you could be causing this?

Another poster has a problem with oil on his spark plugs too, on the board, at the moment.

The oil leak is from the valve cover baffles(crankcase breather covers, or what ever you want to call them). They are siliconed on to the valve covers on both left and right sides. Very common problem on all 112 and 113 motors. You can do it yourself pretty easily. biggest thing is to clean and prep the surfaces before resealing them. You can leave the valve covers attached to the engine and just reseal the baffles. I would recommend to get the vent hoses for the drivers side baffle, since they do tear when trying to remove them. The rubber gets hard and is not pliable. The passenger side is almost always soft and east to remove.

Tools you will need are-
-torx 30 male bit
-torx e10 female socket
-torx 25 male bit
- and a few picks and assorted tools for cleaning the old silicone out of the channels in baffles.

-some clean rags
-parts wash
-tube of silcone, rtv, or whatever.

I probably forgot something ther, but if you want to PM me, I can give you a better step by step.

Slight smell of oil inside the cabin...

Thanks for all the advise.. I really appreciate it..

I dropped my ML at the dealer very early this morning in order to fix this leak. Below is the diagnostic and the part numbers used to fix my leak. Just in case somebody need the detailed information.. The leak was somehow a lot bigger than what I thought. I thought there was another leak by the transmission at the bottom, but it turned out that somehow the top leak was sipping all the way to the bottom.

CAUSE: RT Side valve cover gasket leaking.

Gasket: 1 113-016-03-21 $26.45
Sealant:1 003-989-98-20-10 $27.60
Labor (2.6 Hours): $313.12

That was it. I wish my dealer paid 2.6 hours for that. Haha. Good you got it taken care of. Usually its not the valve cover gasket thats leaking, usually the silicone the seals the baffle to cover. But since you are fixing one leak, its not much more to go and do the v.c. gasket at the same time. Piece of mind for a few extra dollars in parts.
