I am changing the oil in my mom's 04 ML 500 this week. What weight Mobil 1 should I use and is there any pic by pic instructions anywhere here ? I searched and didnt come up with any.

i use mobile 1 fully synthetic 10w 30 in mine but thats just me.

mobile1 0-40, it say "For European Cars" on it.

That would be: sucking up ~ 8 quarts using the dipstick tube and a oil-change suction pump . . .

Nope, not a bad idea: apparently, that is how MB designed the e_ngine to be drained, e.g., "Since the early '70s all Mercedes engines have been designed for vacuum oil extraction . . . the factory recommended method of oil removal. . ."

The truck requires 0W-40 Euro Mobil 1 as stated above. Other approved oils are listed at Wolfgang's ML Page under SHOP TALK.

Check your owners manual to see how much oil you need. I would only use Mobil 1 0W40. You can buy the mityvac 7201. I have had one of those. I got a pneumatic pump for Griot's Garage as a birthday present last summer. That is really nice. You will need a compressor though. If not, the mityvac works just fine.

You can get a filter from the dealer or locally. Just pump the oil out of the fill tube, remove the filter. Replace oil and filter and dipstick. Torque the filter cover to 25Nm. You should check and see to confirm this number. It is right on the plastic cover. A "B" cup oil filter wrench is useful. Harbor Freight has them cheap but you can get them just about at any parts store.

Good luck. This is a pretty straightforward job. I am sure you will do just fine.
I would really use Mobil 1 0W40.
