transmission fluid/filter change

does $225 sound like a fair price for this procedure by an indie shop? I have about 57K on a 2003 ml350 and the oil was last changed about 4k miles ago. should I do the next oil/filter change at about 5k miles and do the transmission oil/filter now or wait for the 60k mark and do both? thanks for the help.

Wow!!, that's cheap, I paid $400 with a filter change. Would have been about $70 cheaper if I didn't change the filter.

For that price, I don't think he will be "replacing" all the trans fluid.

All he will do is remove the fluid in the pan, remove the pan, remove the filter, put new filter, pour new fluid in the pan, put back the screws.

That's like replacing less than half of the fluid. By the way, you can do all of the above yourself with not much effort. Pan gasket and filter are less than $50. The MB trans fluid is $15 a quart. The pan holds about little more than 3 quarts.

If you go with the indie, make sure he uses the genuine MB trans fluid.

That seems like a reasonable assumption, but it is surely a question the OP ought to ask the indie.

The indie trans shop I went to used 11 quarts of MB fluid. They dropped the pan and cleaned it, fit a new filter and gasket and then flushed the converter and cooler lines, all for five bucks less than our OP's quote. So it is possible but you do want to know for sure.

If you are inclined to DIY there are lots of tips in the 210 forum, same trans, check the stickies there. You would need a new cap and dipstick tool as well as an infrared thermometer (cheap at Harbor Freight). Also, if you do a complete change, one of our members was told by the dealer that you can use the new 7 speed fluid, which is about half the price of the 722 fluid.

Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

I have a 2000 ML320 w/ 90K miles...I'm thinking the the life-time transmission fluid is BS and that I should change it. However, after reading several posts regarding this topic, I just have more questions than answers. First, do I have to use MB fluid? It's just synthetic fluid, right? There are several "premium" synthetic fluids available that are half the price. Next, if I need to flush the transmission, then I'm guessing a shop would be more economical than the purchase of the equipment? Last, what about the transfer case...should it be serviced also? Thanks in advance...Benzworld rocks!

You're spot on!

Yes, to be on the safe side.

Better to be safe than sorry - Dont be penny wise and pound foolish - USE MB recommended transmission fluid.
