Hey guys, I am having the worst time with the brakes on my 2005 ML350SE. I have replaced the pads and rotors about 20k miles ago with all OEM parts...They stop fine but they always squeal at low speeds!! As far as I recall, they have always made noise.
JoeE46M3,
I feel your pain! My ML55 is doing the same thing now and I feel so embarrassed that I don't drive it at the moment - I use my '92 190e instead.
I have front rotors and brake pads on order from MB to arrive in about 2 weeks time and until then I have parked it - It's embarrassing to have a supposedly high-end vehicle which squeals as you come to a stop and then you have Toyota, Nissan, Lexus and Acura drivers laughing their heads off at you in traffic! Yuck!
Hopefully 43sqd's advice above, which I have followed, regarding the right pairing "marriage" of rotors and pads from the same manufacturer/supplier will get rid of the annoying squeal.
I did roughen up the surface...I was reading editorials from respected people when I heard about "Soaking" the rotor to free all debris after roughing it up.
I called MB to get the new goo they use. The dumb guy on the phone said "yeah, dont have that stuff" I said "what do your techs use?"
He said "Um they get it from somewhere around here, not sure"
Gotta love that first class service. No harm by putting anything on back of the pad, right?
The ML320/350 uses a different braking system than the ML430/500. The V6's use Floating calipers and the V8's use Fixed calipers. The brake pads are completely different and require different mounting procedures. I think the Side Paste thing is for the V8 Fixed caliper pads and is not called out in the instructions for the V6's pads. At least that is what I show for my 98ML320 and 05ML500 ALLDATA instructions. I use the spray on anti-squeal stuff for both brake pad types and have had good success. Could it be possaible that the squeal is a Mercedes safety thing? It could be a warning device to let people know you are approaching.

It definitely is!!
Here is my experience. My indy shop replaced the Brembo rotors and OEM pads. The squeal was so loud and annoying. They said the paste contaminated surface of the pad. After replacing the pads with a new one (at no cost) there has been not a single squeal. He said once the paste gets on the surface of pad, you cannot clean it.
