2000 ML320: Cannot get it out of park and into drive

My car recently started getting the BAS/ESP light. A few days ago, I strated having some trouble getting the car out of park and into drive. But I usually succeeded within a few minutes and scheduled an appointment for this coming Friday to get it checked out. Otherwise, the car drives perfectly fine. Today, however, I tried for about 10 minutes and could not get the car out of park.

I read on the forum somewhere that the problem is associated with the brake pedal switch. Is that true? Would changing the the brake switch fix it? I also remember reading somewhere that the instructions on how to change the brake pedal switch are posted online somewhere -- but I can't seem to find them. Could you some be kind enough to post the link?

And what the "manual shift lock release"? I read that you can get the car out of park and into the drive by utilizing this thing. Where is it located? I need to get it to the dealership. A tow truck cannot enter the part of my house where the car is parked.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Checking and replacing the brake switch is very easy.

-Unscrew the driver side footwell cover.
-Disconnect the OBD port from the cover before removing the cover.
-Unplug the switch cables.
-Turn the switch and it will pop out.

Pictoral information on manual shift lock release can be found in the manual, "Towing the vehicle" section.
